TFA before Consulting
General opinion on a segue to consulting via TFA? I haven't seen any posts in a while on the topic and I thought I'd start one.

Career Resources
I'd put this in a different forum. You'll get more responses.
Thanks! Didn't know that it was under the new user one.
Seems like McKinsey hires out of TFA: http://www.mckinsey.com/careers/join_us/university_recruiting/schools/b…
Well that's very reassuring to read, thanks for the response!!
I've seen a sizable presence of TFA alumni at consulting info sessions for MBB & Deloitte. It's definitely an experience they value. Just make sure you go into it with set plans for timing as many of the alumni I met did an internship with their firm in the summer prior to finishing up their TFA term.
Can confirm - knew a few people at Deloitte S&O that came from TFA as well.
I took that path, it's actually not really all that uncommon now. I'd say the majority of folks from TFA got their offer while during their 2nd year, as not too many summer spots are available (and the school year timing is kind of screwed up depending on where you teach).
If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me, but as far as general opinion on it goes: it's definitely doable, and having prior work experience is definitely a + when you start compared to your fellow BA/A/ACs. What in particular are you looking to find out?
I know from my TFA cohort/region there was 1 Bain, 1 BCG, and 3 Deloittes. In my office alone there are 2 TFA 1st years and 2 TFA 2nd years out of the combined 21 Pre-MBA hires (although this is likely an anomaly as I'm pretty sure we're extremely overindexed relative to the rest of North America).
I think the order of hiring propensity is:
Deloitte (Various practices, not just S&O) >>> McKinsey >> BCG > Bain. I only know of that one person in TFA that was hired by Bain.
Thanks for the reply IBTeaching, I PMed you with some other questions if you have the time.
Hi All,
I'm also interested to learn more about this topic. Do you think it would hurt your chances of getting into consulting if you're already two years out of college and then going into an additional two years of TFA? Does TFA help that much with getting into these firms?
Thanks
While it is helpful in getting looks at these firms, it's not the best route to take. If you already have 2 years of work experience and you want to get into consulting, my suggestion would be to NOT do TFA. I would get relevant finance or industry experience, do B-School, and then join one of the firms post-MBA.
What did you spend the 2 years doing, if I may ask? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to put everything on front street.
If you have a passion for helping low-income individuals near your community, I highly suggest Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. The program is definitely more focused and personalized, since they match you with a younger individual. I've enjoyed it so far and feel as though I am making a bigger impact than I would in a classroom of 20-30 individuals (my teaching skills kind of blow anyway).
If, however, your passion is more focused on career advancement, TFA definitely opens doors. One colleague at my old firm did TFA, but he was quite critical of the program, since it only requires individuals to be in the classroom for two years; consequently, the program's incentives are not fully aligned with the objective of buffering quality education for low-income students..
IBTeaching how about joining TFA after one year of working?
