thank you email every time

Hi, This is a silly question, but I don’t know what is the protocol here. If I interview with the same person twice over two different rounds, am I supposed to send him a thank you note after every interview??! Case in point: had a first round with a MD, after which I sent him a note, to which he didn’t respond but he passed me onto the next round which was a case study. I had a case study presentation with the same MD recently that also went well. My question is am I expected to thank him after the case study, and if so, how should I phrase my email without coming across as despo and over-eager. Bear in mind that he didn’t respond to my thank you email after the first time. Please advise me as I’m 30 years old and don’t want to risk looking like a tool. Thanks in advance!

IMO you're overthinking it. Based on the fact you wrote this, you feel it's the right thing to do, so do it. Not everything needs to be overly-strategic, demonstrating character especially so. Sometimes it's better to lead by example rather than follow perceived expectations. That's been my experience, at least.
