The 2016-2017 WSO Internship - Apply Now

We are VERY excited to open up this new internship opportunity to 5 talented and hard-working candidates. As you will see in the description below, this internship is different than anything we have offered in the past. I have managed hundreds of interns & campus reps over the last 5 years, but this time we want to offer something more concentrated, serious, and long term. We will be expecting more from any intern in the past, but we will also be offering more in return. Particularly in regards to the amount of meaningful work you will be doing directly with us and the immediate and measurable impact it will have that you can add to your resume, explain in an interview, or bring up when networking.

Application deadline for first round of interviews: Tuesday Aug 23, 10am et.

What we're specifically looking for:

  • ~5 interns, each will have 1 core project + a set of ongoing tasks and one-off tasks
  • A longer commitment period of 9 months. Though if you can only commit to 6-8 months I may consider you if you're an exceptional candidate and can commit to doing more work each week. Additionally, a shorter internship may mean we need to reduce some of the benefits you would receive
  • ~20 hours per week on average (some weeks 15, some weeks up to 25, depending on your schedule), with time off given during school breaks, mid-terms, finals, etc.

The Core Projects:

The chosen candidates will be assigned to one of these core roles based on their experience and interests.

  • Content & Community Management
  • Blogging Intern Manager
  • Social Media Specialist
  • SEO Link-building / Media relations / Business Development
  • One-two more roles TBD depending on the applications I receive and the needs we need to fill
  • There is the possibility for interns to rotate positions halfway through

Some of the specific tasks for each of these roles:

Content & Community Management Intern:

  • Helping me source and identify content for the frontpage
  • Working in conjunction with the blogging intern manager and social media intern
  • Though some things have changed, you can get a good idea of this role here: Content Management Internship
  • Community management tasks include things like awarding silver bananas for top content, flagging spam, identifying potential users we can certify, etc.

Social Media Specialist:

  • I am looking for a social media whiz: facebook, reddit, twitter, linkedin -- I want the intern responsible for managing our presence across all these platforms + potentially more
  • Working in conjunction with the Content Intern
  • Though this post is a bit outdated, it gives you a general idea of what I am looking for: WSO Social Media Internship

Blogging Intern Manager:

  • You will be managing the ~7 interns (and growing) currently in our blogging internship to ensure they are posting according to their timeline and that they are following the guidelines outlined in the training
  • Since you are the leader of this group, you will need to go through the training and are expected to post as well (this is easier than it sounds and I am able to teach you all of this during our training)
  • The trial period/project for this position is a bit different, I will need to see your talent / consistency as a blogging intern first (a minimum of 5 posts will be required)

SEO Link-building / Media relations / Business Development:

  • Helping grow our list of media contacts
  • Working with Patrick, Renae (our VP of marketing) and I to create more partnerships with relevant websites and events
  • Potentially starting back up, improving on, and managing interns in our SEO Linkbuilding Internship
  • Managing the progress of the interns in our finance event research project (currently ongoing), I will send more info once you apply
  • More tasks to be explained in training

Additional key tasks to be covered by one intern:

  • Creating powerpoint files for our webinar presenters (~2 per month)
  • Watching the webinars in our video library and creating "chapters" and noting what content is covered at what time of the webinar
  • Helping research finance related events

Examples of ongoing side tasks:

  • (All interns will be responsible for doing the following)
  • Community tasks such as flagging spam, awarding silver bananas, looking for users to potentially certify
  • Posting WSO content via our facebook page and other social media
  • All interns will be expected to be posting topics in the WSO forum each week, similar to what we expect from our blogging interns but at a reduced level (and you will go through this training)
  • Helping research finance related events
  • There will be some additional tasks (ongoing and one-off tasks) which will be covered in training, and like all internships there may be a small amount of mindless data entry related tasks, but we will do our best to keep this to a minimum

The application process:

  • If you have any questions before applying feel free to email me
  • TO APPLY: Email me ([email protected]) with the subject "WSO Internship" the following:
  • Your resume and the link to your Linkedin
  • Please mention which core project(s) you are most interested in and why
  • Please answer the following questions:

  • B) Why should I consider you for this internship? Tell me one unique thing about your experience/background
  • C) Please mention any specific skills/background relevant to the internship role you are most interested in (e.g. social media experience)
  • D) Is there anything else I should know when considering you for the internship? Are you able to commit to an average of 20hrs a week for 9 months?
  • E) Did you read this entire page (testimonials optional)? I will quiz you on it during our first phone call :-) (consider this your first test project)
  • Additional notes:
  • The top applications I will respond back with more info, a small trial project, and a time to set up a phone call
  • Candidates who have previous experience with us (intern or campus rep) will be given preference

Why intern for us?

  • See this success story: "Non target => WSO Intern => Major US Bank" from Nov 17, 2013
  • I have heard from numerous interns and campus reps that having "Wall Street Oasis" on their resume specifically helped them land an internship or FT job offer
  • The tangible and intangible perks you will receive (see below)
  • Via our Facebook and Linkedin groups you can tap into the network of several hundred former interns, bloggers and campus reps who are now professionals in the finance industry
  • Below, make sure to see A) tangible benefits, B) intangible benefits, C) Patrick's message regarding the internship and b) the list of testimonials from previous interns

Additional info:

  • Who this internship is best for: Freshman-Juniors who need a key long-term internship with a well known name in the finance world. The internship is also helpful for Seniors/Grad Students, but underclassmen will reap the most benefits from this opportunity.
  • This internship is also best for those looking for that internship that isn't just mindless data entry, you will be given REAL projects & responsibility from that start that will have an immediate impact on the site
  • ALL interns will begin with a 3-4 week trial period in which if either party decides it is not the right fit the internship can be terminated
  • If you fall behind on your work (you will receive no more than two warnings) we have the right to terminate your internship at any time
  • Once you master your core internship project(s), I'm fine helping you add your own interns for you to manage on your projects
  • We will have you input your activities each week on a google sheet and with Jack's help (my assistant), we will be assigning a qualitative score (1-5) to help track your progress and to help set up goals for you to strive for

Logistics:

  • Start date: ASAP
  • You will be doing the work remotely, your location is irrelevant
  • Your hours will average to be about 20 per week. I am very flexible in giving time off when needed
  • Most projects will be on a weekly basis, in that we won't expect you to be online at a certain time of day. Most interns in the past have done their work during the evening
  • My 2015-16 campus rep assistant Jack (3rd year at Western Ontario University) will be helping me manage this group of interns
  • There will be monthly group conference calls to go over everyone's projects, answer questions, give advice, and offer up encouragement

General skills/requirements:

  • Knowledge of what WSO is all about (ie study our About Us page, browse through our homepage content, and watch this interview with patrick on Mixergy)
  • Native English speaker for any content related internship
  • College level (or higher) writing skills
  • SOLID WORK ETHIC, SELF-STARTER, AND ABLE TO MEET DEADLINES. Please read "Coffee is for Closers" to get an idea of what I mean
  • A VERY professional attitude, particularly when corresponding with clients, partners, customers, etc.
  • Able to respond to emails within 24 hours during the week (unless you have given me advanced notice)
  • Most importantly, I don't care what your background is, what your stats are. I just want candidates who can be 100% committed to the internship
  • Bonus: if you have a solid track record as a poster on WSO (good sb:ms ratio, and have been a good contributor to the site)

Tangible benefits for you:

A) Access to WSO Products ($1,049 value)

  • (Some perks will be given out during the internship, but the majority you will receive upon FULL completion of the agreed upon internship timeline.)
  • ($~550 total value) - Access to all 13 of the WSO Guides (these guides vary in price from $30-$99/each). This includes the IB Prep Pack (tech/networking/behavioral guides, $200 value on its own). The PE/HF prep packs are not included
  • ($499 value) - Six month access to our video library (220+ of our webinars + mock interviews, $399 value), company database (free but requires an entry to access) and job board ($100 value). You can delay access to these for up to one year.

B) Additional benefits, access to Patrick and me:

  • PDF and Linkedin letter of recommendation from me
  • Referral to potential employer / confirm your status for a background check (up to 4, max 3 years into the future)
  • I will do my best to connect you over email or linkedin with a professional of your choosing in my network (up to 4)
  • I can have someone in my network of finance professionals give a brief critique of your resume. NOTE - this is not a comprehensive resume review like what we offer in our resume review service.
  • One hour phone call with me at the end of your internship to go over everything and answer any and all questions you have
  • Patrick and I are happy to assist you with your career decisions, e.g. give recommendations, referrals etc.

Intangible benefits:

  • You will be able to have a noticeable impact from the start. The projects you will work on will have a direct impact on the growth and success of WSO. See below about the level of responsibilities you will be given
  • After your trial period you will be in given a fair amount of responsibility. This ISN'T some basic data entry internship. After just a couple months into the internship you will start to gather concrete stats/data that you can show on your resume and explain in interviews
  • Managerial experience: I will allow you to recruit and manage your own interns
  • You will get a VERY inside look at how a successful online community is run
  • Finance: You will have a ton of exposure to parts of WSO that you may not have known about, and depending on the internship, exposure to other finance/business-related bloggers/blogs/websites
  • I personally have had several internships in the past, so I know how it is and I've tried to design this internship to be as beneficial for you as possible.

  • Additional info from Patrick Curtis, CEO & Founder:

Putting "Wall Street Oasis" on your resume when you are trying to break into Wall Street is a way to demonstrate an interest in finance. Even if it is just 1-2 bullets -- showing some relevant experience is important.

This is a great internship option to those that are having trouble breaking into a bank and/or want to supplement what they are already doing to make themselves more competitive. For many of our previous interns, the experience has helped them tremendously. We want to make sure you also gain a lot from the internship which is why we offer so many perks.

I am willing to serve as a personal reference for the interns that show a dedication to WSO and go above and beyond. Whether that is an introduction over LinkedIn or some advice over e-mail, I like to help our best interns to make sure they are headed in the right direction and have a great shot at landing their dream job." -- Patrick Curtis, Chief Monkey

    Testimonials from previous interns

"Working for WSO has been a unbelievably rewarding experience! When Patrick and Andy say they will allow you to work on projects that are extremely impactful once you’ve proven your competence, they’re really not kidding around. Looking back and thinking about how the projects I completed were read and used by thousands of people is a really neat thing to reflect upon.

If you’re an undergraduate with a passion for finance that is looking for ways to gain real world experience, then you’re at the right place. This experience has tremendously strengthened my resume and has been an extremely strong talking point during networking calls. I’m lucky enough to be staying on after my internship to lead a very large and interesting project regarding site content with Patrick, which I can’t wait to get started on!

But, all in all, the hands down best part of my time as a content management intern was becoming a part of the WSO community. I’ll be a WSO user for life. "

    — Nick(Content Management Intern, 2016)

"Working for WSO has been one of the best experiences I’ve had so far. Coming from a non-target, both reading and working for this site has given me great insight into everything finance. Not only that, but the company has a great reputation and it was a tremendous help having WSO on my resume. A lot of people in the interviews said how cool it was that I worked there and one of the interviewers was even in the same graduating class as Patrick! I’ll be starting my BB summer internship soon at a top group and I have to thank WSO for it. If you have the opportunity, it is one of the best things you can do with your time. "

    — Michael (Blogging & Content Intern, 2014)

During the course of my internship as a WSO webinar intern, my primary responsibility was to make presentations for industry professionals. Through this experience, I learned a lot about various industries and gained deep insights about breaking into tier one corporate positions. In addition, WSO offered me some great perks which made the experience even more enjoyable. —Anwar, 2015-16 Campus Rep & webinar intern

As a blogging intern, not only was I able to improve my writing skills, I was also able gain more knowledge about the industry. Another good thing about a WSO internship is that you can do your work whenever and wherever you are. Both Patrick and Andy are great guys, and they will provide all the resources you need to succeed. Andy even went out of his way to connect me to an investment banker who used to intern for WSO. Working for WSO is a must-have experience for students going into finance. —Quan, 2016 Blogging Intern

"I discovered WSO when one of their articles was picked up by another site. When I looked over the content I was impressed by the originality and candor from a variety of people. It is not often that you get seasoned professionals, new additions and those looking for a gateway to their future profession in one place sharing information in such a candid fashion. I found a number of articles very insightful and well written, especially those parts of the business where I am not well versed; and a few even provided some much needed laugh out loud moments. My decision to write was due to the quality of content on the site, value of information dissemination and an opportunity to enhance my communication and writing skills while delivering thought provoking" —Lone Wolf, 2013 Contributing Blogger

From this thead: WSO Intern and an overdue (and long) thank you!
"My internship with WSO was a great experience and helped me in many ways. Having such a recognised brand name within the finance community on my resume set me apart from other candidates and gave me an interesting hook in my applications. Also, I could kill two birds with one stone as I got the chance to explore many insightful and interesting discussions while carrying out my internship tasks. Furthermore, it was great working with Andy & Patrick as they were always patient and helpful. In addition, the WSO guides are useful resources for interview preparation, and they have definitely helped me in clinching a summer internship! I would definitely recommend this internship to anyone who is serious about breaking into finance."

    — Jacqueline (WSO Intern Spring 2014)

"I'm only about halfway into the internship, but it should be said that the tangible benefits definitely outweigh the amount of work you do. First off, Andy really wants to help you out: I initially began as a forum discussion starter, and was luckily given the chance to be a weekly contributing author-- nice addition to my (previous lacking) resume. Second, not only am I exposed to finance and business knowledge exponentially more than before, but I've become a much better writer and have created more opportunities for myself; I've already gotten another internship off this, as well as an interview for another one in the spring. Employers love the name, think it's wonderful that you're tech savvy, and can trust that you know a good amount about business. Additionally, you get the WSO guides-- which were surprisingly jam-packed with useful information. These aren't your typical e-books that should really be 3-page articles... these are thick, no-BS bibles that will lead you closer to your dream job. Finally, the CEO and COO are really nice guys! You won't regret this decision.

1/22/2013 update: Would I be able to keep this position indefinitely? You would be shocked at how WSO has opened up doors for me like this one. Being that I'm going to grad school for finance soon, I'd love to keep contributing." —Jake (Writing Intern, Fall/Winter 2012-13)

"The rep program is one of these low risk high return investments that no one believe in. Investing only a few hours a week, the program allowed to extend my social circle, and I met most of the finance majors at my school within the first few weeks of class. All of them heard at least once about the website, and I know it has been helpful to a lot of them. My social media activity fed real life conversations with other students but also with professors in class. Getting free access to WSO resources, such as the interview guides, is a HUGE asset, that allowed me to land several interviews and improved the way I approach networking. Would recommend the program to any finance student who wants to meet peers from other colleges and get access to the perks. Great line on the resume, great perks, great team, what else!?"

    — Etienne (#1 Overall Campus Rep 2014-15)

"I wanted to take a moment and say thanks for the opportunity to intern and be apart of the WSO community. I recently transitioned to a major US bank as a FIG credit risk associate. As a political science and non-target undergrad, I never really thought I had the chance to land at a major bank. WSO gave me solid name recognition, talking points, and access to tons of great information. Just goes to show with some networking, hard work, luck, and WSO, most anybody can land a solid position at a name brand firm. Thanks again to you and the WSO team; let me know if I can help in the future." — Tim, SEO intern, Fall 2013
