The Art of Storytelling

Alright, so you've landed a gig and know that your communication skills were good enough to beat the gatekeepers. However, that's not the end. The ceiling for developing communications skills is almost endless and I've recently gained an interest in the art of storytelling.

When conducting presentations, leading meetings, networking and pitching, a good story is necessary to captivate the audience (particularly if they're fee paying). We spend so much time looking for the 'story' behind the numbers that it is almost futile to do so without being able to project it effectively.

Even outside of work, the best storytellers tend to have the best social lives.

My question is: have any of you looked into this topic and, if so, what was your best resource? A few that I've come across are:
- Toastmasters societies
- Recording yourself speaking and critically evaluating
- Reading/studying texts such as Dale Carnegie's 'The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking' [slightly skeptical of the benefits of a self-help book to your storytelling ability - let me know if you think otherwise]
