The Benevolence of MDs

I'm a sophomore at a target and I recently got in contact with an MD from a BB who was nice enough to give me some career advice and told me to call him again this week. He said his division doesn't traditionally take interns and I know his bank is done with recruiting. I'm currently striking out with summer opportunities and wanted to know if it would be appropriate to ask if he knew anyone who still had room for the summer. Is that too forward or half expected by him anyway?

Why did he say to call him again this week? Was there something left open for discussion? If he said to call him again... do it! Take advantage that he's willing to talk to you and help you. Sounds like an excellent lay up to ask for a referral.

Go with "I really would like to work for your firm next summer, what can I do this summer to best prepare for next summer?" Then see if he takes the bait and suggests something with his bank.

This is a good point above.

You are still a sophomore. The critical year is the junior internship, so it sounds like you are ahead of the game.

I think this approach is a polite way of getting you in the right direction. Definitely keep up your contact with this guy and anybody else you can meet.

Networking for banking is huge.

Even if he doesnt give you a spot at HIS bank, he might honestly have good advice about what you can do with your Sophomore summer.

I tried the line and all he told me was to make sure I got something finance related this summer. Said he'd help me out with some other stuff but never explicitly said anything about a job this summer. I definately do want to stay in contact with him so would it seem over the top to send an actual thank you note to his office in addition to an email?

Why oh why do folks speak in ambiquities... e.g. how this banker said he'd help you "with some other stuff but never explicitly said anything" about a job this summer?

What did that mean? And why can't folks speak direct?

He knows perfectly well why you're calling and what you really want and if he can help he should help. He shouldn't steer you in the direction of these exhaustive games tossing around inuendos of assistance of some mysterious kind. Geez, this MD just annoyed the crap out of me...
