The Divided States of America?

Disclaimer – this post is about over politicizing things, not attacking one belief versus another.

“Politics runs this country – doesn’t make a difference what party – all of the decisions are made in Washington and that’s the way it is. And nobody’s going to change that either.” That quote came from a World War II veteran I was speaking to over this weekend and it got me thinking how much more it seems to invade our lives in the most trivial ways. It seems like every news station, website, etc has some angle or slant that one person or party is to blame for whatever ails them and it seems to be dividing the country more so than I had seen in my short time on this earth.

Over the last two presidential elections there have been record numbers of younger voters hitting the poles. From my limited observation, many of these younger voters have emerged to side with the Democratic party which has really brought to the forefront issues of polarization on the heels of the Occupy movement. It seemed to draw more lines in the sand than your typical political debate. It became a war of classes and beliefs, an us versus them mentality. The computer hacking community Anonymous was a strong proponent of many of the OWS issues and activities. Now everytime you turn on the TV it's hearing about the Republicans fault about the fiscal cliff, the Dems fault about high costs of healthcare, etc. rather than trying to find logical solutions to these problems and issues.

While I’m not here chastising anyone for standing up for their beliefs, my issue is the inability to come to agreement on issues that are affecting this country and world we live in. I find it absolutely ridiculous that it’s a political issue to tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body should she become pregnant. That’s an issue of humanity. Why is it a talking point in the media when one side is willing to “reach across the aisle” to solve an issue? Great. That’s your job.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m just crazy but it seems like people are more divided than ever and less willingness to keep the adult discussion going in attempt to make this world a better place.

It just seems like we’re getting ever closer to realizing the movie “Idiocracy” in real life. Everyone can go buy their ammo and guns and stock up for the third world war that will inevitably be started by our very own government against its very citizens because they’ve been tapping your cell phones and emails for years and know what you’ve been up to. They know that you’ve been hiding money from the government in your sock drawer, microwave, shoebox in the back yard, and it’s nothing more than [insert the party you don’t vote for]’s FAULT! I thought this was the land of freedom, not the next movement of socialism and Nazi regime. If our President wasn’t an illegal Arab/Muslim/Jihadist that can’t produce a valid US birth certificate, who is not so secretly in bed with the Middle Eastern terrorists, we would be living the high life like we were in the Clinton years. And I won’t even start on how the Republicans screwed up the global economy in the most organized scam of orchestrated robbery the world has ever seen.

I wish I knew a way to bring this to more constructive discussions with those we elected but, since I don’t, I’m going to go back to ignoring all the “bipartisan” b.s. that I have to hear every day and treat it like the inaudible drivel it truly is.

Generally I believe the reason for so many young voters going to the Dems is because of social policies that are important to young people. It is difficult for the Republican Party to hark on about the economy all they want but that isn't going to change a young persons mind and with ignorant politicians taking a stands on abortion, birth control, and gay marriage (no matter how you feel about it personally) the GOP stands the risk of alienating a generation of voters.

The Republicans are lucky that some people like to identify themselves as conservative but actually aren't. When I did a study abroad year at Wharton I dated an upper middle class girl (privatel educated in the North Wast) who harked on about how conservative she was and how she hates Obama but if she had to pick a bunch of policies off a list she's just as socially liberal as most intelligent educated university students. I'm ignoring economics here because she didn't have an oppinion on the matter.

Part of the problem I believe is the 2 party system which creates this great divide of black and white. In the UK on a LOT of issues the main parties are the same and fall in the central ground, whether this is representing the people or the political/social/economic (which ever fits the conspiracy theory best) elite is another matter. Having multiple parties allows pressure groups which become large enough to get seats in parliament in the UK bring the main parties into the centre and get things done.

Yeah, the UK and other EU nations are run so well...

Excellent example....

Having two parties is a blessing. It forces people to come together. If you didn't have two parties you'd have people elected on singular issues and a hogpog of people in the government. Go look at Italy and see how it is.

Young people vote Dem because they vote on social issues and have no wealth. Once you start actually paying for this country you quickly realize that economics trump social issue. I wouldn't considering being the party of young people who get their news from a Comedy channel something to be proud of.

I often think the same thing. But then I realize I, and a majority of the people in this country, are doing nothing to change it. Sure, it would be great to have everyone reach some middle ground on issues but that is never going to happen with the amount of political apathy the US population has. I can read about 3 sentences of an article about politics before moving on to something else. I want to get into it because the whole thing is driving me bonkers, but I just can't.

If people actually cared, then there would be action and change. The people in the middle are the silent majority; we need to get off our collective ass and yell a bit louder then the left and right. After I browse YouTube.

I just think it is the nature of the middle or majority. Most people aren't gay, aren't poor, aren't involved in a political cause. Most people just work, come home and go out to eat or something. Giving a shit about these causes is a lot of work and effort for little return.

I really think this demise of conservatism is foolish. Gay Marriage is the only issue that conservatives are going to have to give on. Once that is done with everything else is fine.

I agree, but that is largely media spin. Republicans are against Illegal immigration. I find it sad that Americans of Mexican descent identify with people here breaking the law instead of their own people (Americans). Every other citizen of the world has to go through the normal process to become Americans. Simply because Mexicans were lucky enough to be born within walking distance to the US doesn't mean they should be granted amnesty.

Furthermore, it simply fucks lower income and lesser educated Americans (sadly, disproportionally African Americans, another Dem strong hold). Illegal immigration lowers wages and takes jobs from lower educated individuals. Republicans support it because it is a kick back to business and Dems do it for the votes.

We need stiff and I mean stiff penalties to any company employing an illegal immigrant. This will dry up demand and send people packing.

I don't know how Republicans bridge the gap. Hispanics are a natural fit for the Republican platform, but the immigration issue has tainted them.
