The Finance/Corporate life. Please respond!!

I am currently a high school senior, and I will be, hopefully, accepted into UMich, Emory, and NYU. I'm pretty confident that I will be.

If you want to travel, look into consulting. IB/PE analysts don't travel. I also guarantee you that the travel you think you will be doing is the exact opposite of the travel that actually occurs in the real world. Good thing you're an incoming freshmen and have plenty of time to research.

UMich (especially if you get into their undergrad business school) gets recruited from by Goldman, Citi, BofA, etc... NYU (assuming you got into Stern) will be extremely cut throat as 90% of your class is gunning for IBD. Emory, from what I hear, is good in the Southeast, but not much pull in other major areas of the US.

I have friends from UMich and NYU, I would suggest UMich especially if you can position yourself to qualify into their undergrad business school. Both places have bad weather but at least UMich has a D-1 athletic program.

I agree that if you want to travel you should aim for consulting. I go to Emory and can speak to the quality of the program. Goizueta is a top notch business school in terms of caliber of professors, accessibility, and does great with recruitment. Average starting salary last year was 60k.

I disagree with itsinthebag that Emory only does well in the southeast, its a top20 university and a top5 BBA program on Businessweek, so as you can imagine it does quite well throughout the U.S. In terms of IBD recruitment plenty of people make it up to NYC as presence on the street is strong. Pretty much all banks recruit here with the exception of Goldman IBD and Morgan Stanley (in past few years).

In terms of where to go, I would strongly recommend UMich Ross, its a great school and has better recruitment for IBD then Emory. As for NYU vs. Emory it really depends what you want to do. I think the academic quality of the business program and the university overall is better at Emory and you will have a more enjoyable college experience. On the other hand, Stern is basically in the backyard of the street so definitely benefits from that presence.

But given your 3 choices I would go with UMich hands down. Best of luck to you and feel free to PM if you have any questions about Emory.

So, I did some research on consulting, and that seems more reasonable to me. I have highly considered UMich, and NYU. How is the salary for consulting careers?

At Emory, you get a BBA and can concentrate in Finance if you chose to. You can have up to 2 concentrations (Finance, Accounting, Strategy, etc). The best school out of those 3 is UMich, you should definitely go there. I would go to Emory over NYU though unless you are specifically gunning for IBD.

NYU has binding ED, so there's no way you would've gotten into all of the those schools this early. Even then, none of them would have released decisions by now, ED or RD.

The choice of which school to go to should be made after the decisions. The best choice is NYU. Yes it's cutthroat but your nightlife will be the envy of your uptown neighbors

I am an outstanding student, and I've spoken to all of my admissions counselors; I basically got into to all of them. Sorry for the confusion, and nightlife is not as much important as my career path for success, but it is something to think about.

Went to NYU Stern. Previously had lived in the city, so it wasn't a big deal for me, but can be very hard for some. NYU does not give you the college experience. No quad, no frat houses, and the parks/green space is a joke. Doesn't mean it's bad, but completely different from other schools. Don't go to NYU if you don't get into Stern. Too many try to transfer and very few succeed. NYU ex-Stern isn't a bad school, just very very expensive and probably not worth the money in terms of opportunities.

Thank you soo much!!! That is exactly what I was looking for!! That makes a lot of since.

Why do people always suggest consulting for people that say they have a passion for travel? Yes - you travel a lot in consulting, but typically not to very interesting places, and usually not internationally... I don't think the travel consulting offers is the kind of travel that someone interested in international business (and speaking different languages) would be seeking.

Do you have any suggestions for different careers? I considered PR.

It's a good question... something I thought a lot about while in undergrad, and never came up with a good answer to. I think that you're best off identifying an international destination that you have particular interest in, and then try to work there, instead of trying to find a job that will involve constant international travel.

That said - I know that at the top consulting places like MBB, if you work for 2 places in one location and are a top performer, they will be open to moving you elsewhere. That might be a good option too.
