It will probably get canned; the PR is already so bad and there's so much resistance against it. The threats of being banned from domestic competitions and having their players banned from internationals will be too much. Plus you've even got the UK government criticising it...

The question here is why JPM are funding it. The sums of money that are being discussed are huge, far beyond the already obscene figures in the Premier League and Champions League. For JPM to put in $6bn in cash they must have already agreed significant sponsorship and TV rights - but given how diametrically opposed Sky and BT presenters are, you expect it's not with them. Could it be Amazon

agreed. I want to know who they expect to watch whether that be PPV or at the stadiums? who they expect to present since literally all credible pundits are against it. How they expect to promote this when they clearly aren’t promoting it to the fans since all are against it... it’s honestly laughable is all I can say lool.

Think there would (or was rather) substantial sponsor interest in sports rights - look at Serie A , rugby leagues, Moto GP etc. Prior to this year there was substantial momentum, and presume that JPM though that lended to their chances of a potentially successful syndication of the financing package.

PR now is so low though so agree it will likely be scrapped.

its so blatantly a cash grab attempt by the big boys and its clear now there's no chance the ESL can coexist with the existing footballing establishment i.e. fifa/uefa

already we've seen Mourinho canned for speaking out against it - don't think the players are very enthusiastic about the idea as well...

the question is - what will management/ownership of those 12 clubs do now that they're basically fighting against the rest of the footballing world (even their own staff)? Clearly they needed this to work cause of those huge covid losses and barca is literally teetering on the brink of bankruptcy

Backing out now would be safest but would be hugely humiliating and would still lead to increased pressure on owners to leave - which would be harder to resist if they haven't had the ESL payday. They're supposedly already lawyering up to fight UEFA and the national associations; I think it will eventually fail, but it will probably fail in court rather than the owners willingly backtracking.

oh yeah. judging by their responses to the fifa sanction threats its very clear the ownership group is armed to the teeth - not to mention the big pile of cash JPM pledged

not a legal expert but court is a whole different arena I'm sure - lots of politics/interests and power plays conflicting - i guess court is where footballing reasons would be underweighted and it could honestly go either way esp if FIFA follows through with its threat re world cup sanctions...

interesting to see how this plays out

Nothing wrong with investing, etc. in soccer/football, but the bullshit about having automatic qualification for shit clubs like Arsenal is a real big show of their egos. Fuck that. New club: Borussia Dortmund.

It's a crazy idea, absolutely makes no sense...  I wonder why teams such as Atletico, Man.City, Arsenal and Tottenham must have a fixed spot on the competition. How many Champions League they won? Seriously, it's a big joke

PSG and Bayern stands to benefit the most in this scenario then. But really depends on how the players react - Ander Herrera criticized the idea but obv he's got the liberty to speak his mind

Guess that's also where the 12 clubs' leverage comes from then..."we've got messi, ronaldo, and 95% of the biggest names in the game. you wouldn't dare cut us out completely"

I'll take the opposite stance as everyone here for some fun. With a bit of conjecture on scheduling, here's why it's great:
-Top games such as El Classico will happen more frequently. It would essentially be a Champion's League game, every game
-Players get injured less because of a less packed schedule (players injuries are at their record highest this season)
-Displaces top broadcast deals (this is the biggest issue and why we're seeing such negative propagnda - Sky has literally everything to lose here)
-Introduces new, presumably more flexible options
-Football gets a larger audience base
-Top players make more money

The real reason Sky and BT are creating such negative propaganda about this is because they will lose their top spot in broadcasting. They will literally lose the majority of their cash flow and become second fiddle. They would essentially be covering League 2 instead of the Premier League, except the Premier League would actually become the secondary league, which obviously fucks their market positioning. This is pure propaganda from their "Anonymous" board members giving details just to make people hate the idea. Then, once the idea gets rejected initially, Sky will be in a better negotiating position to join the deal that's more "fair to the sport and helps everyone".

Ta da. Negotiating.

Just had my trade dispute rejected by Schwab for a loss of 35k. This single issue alone should be a gigantic red flag to anyone who trades on their platform. If they have a system error, and you do not video record your trading (they actually said this), they will not honour their fuck up. Switching everything away from them. Fuck this company.

i don't disagree with the sky sports stuff, definitely conflicts of vested interests at play here, but a few things i think are noteworthy:

top games - diminishing marginal utilities / loses allure if it happens every week, and the teams will have to rotate/not field their strongest lineup anyways

injuries - literally nothing changes. maybe a few less games here and there unless they break away from the domestic leagues, which would then be a nightmare scenario for everyone

broadcast options - the whole point of this was to be a cash grab, it'll probably be exclusive rights + even more exorbitant prices

larger audience base - i dont see how this will happen when its the same 12 teams over and over again. literally gatekeeping

players making more - doubt it at least for the near future since these clubs have got massive losses to cover, dont think they'll wanna stretch their wage bill so soon and end up like barca

Why would I not want to see the highest quality football possible? Nobody has to rotate if this league is their bread and butter (which I believe - pure conjecture here - it could be since it's so much more lucrative). Would you change your position if there was no rotating needed?

injuries - literally nothing changes. maybe a few less games here and there unless they break away from the domestic leagues, which would then be a nightmare scenario for everyone

Everything changes if they pull away from domestic leagues though, which they could based on how lucrative it is. Why would it be a nightmare scenario for everyone? It fucks the foundations of teams coming up, funding for lower levels, etc. But the top teams in every sport rake in the majority of the cash - this just supercharges it.

broadcast options - the whole point of this was to be a cash grab, it'll probably be exclusive rights + even more exorbitant prices

Correct - which leads to more money for players, feeding into the points above.

larger audience base - i dont see how this will happen when its the same 12 teams over and over again. literally gatekeeping

They will strike broadcast deals and friendlies with every mediocre team in the globe. There is already a gate being used, they are just changing who owns the gate.

players making more - doubt it at least for the near future since these clubs have got massive losses to cover, dont think they'll wanna stretch their wage bill so soon and end up like barca

You are making my point for me. Currently everyone is getting railed financially, this allows protection for top teams. This is one of the reasons why this proposal is so brilliant (for top clubs, everyone else gets fucked).

These Investors in Clubs don´t care about the Game nor do they understand it. They´re just in for the money.

It looks like the players of these clubs will be banned from the Euros.. England would have to play with players from Burnley,Southampton and so on lol

I actually doubt they’ll ban players from playing in the Euros because it literally has nothing to do with the players, they aren’t the ones pushing for this. I feel like players will eventually stand up against it and normal procedure will eventually be resumed...

I'm pretty sure UEFA and FIFA are in it for the money too, or rather the money they stand to lose if this goes through. Honestly, I'd much rather watch the permanent teams play each other than teams like Ludogorets or Basel in the Champions League.

Hmm I thought it was a mix of Man United dude, Real Madrid dude...JPM. But also DAZN looking to gain massive global brand name recognition. That's the network I thought ready to pay big bucks for this new league. Truly the league was an interesting concept...but UEFA right away called FIFA for support so this is all "negotiating tactics now". Plus why did they go with 6 english clubs? Are the 5-6 (Tottenham, Arsenal) that much more profitable than Roma/Seville/Valencia? Not sure myself on that one.

Are the 5-6 (Tottenham, Arsenal) that much more profitable than Roma/Seville/Valencia?

yes. PL pulls significantly more cash than any other of the big 5 leagues cuz of TV rights etc. Not to mention Serie A and La Liga are woefully mismanaged and their clubs literally go bankrupt every couple of years

Clueless Americans constantly speaking about torture because they have to watch some "big" and "small" teams play together. What makes a loser club of mediocre results like Tottenham big?

Porto, Benfica, Celtic, Feyenoord, Ajax, PSV, Steaua, Red Star, Marseille..... are bigger.

yeah exactly. because watching a matchup like the Charlotte Hornets vs Sacramento Kings would be soooooo entertaining

i love american sports but keep the showbiz aspect away from football

Guys, classic LBO:

1. Load up on debt (€3bn) to fix covid damages, clean up balance sheets (Madrid's president Florentino saving Barça from bankruptcy xd).

2. Finance it with JP at 2-3 % over 23 years.

3. Repay with new TV rights: with shorter attention spans, you get something like streaming on Twitch for genz, yearly series on each team on Netflix.

4. If the biggest 12 teams are on it, Bayern, PSG, Borussia will play the SuperLeague eventually.

5. More competitive and entertaining games get you closer to 4bn viewers, skyrocket revenues.
