The hedge fund job challenge... outside the US
I'm puzzled at how easy getting a hedge fund job in the US seems to be -at least relative to Europe-.
Here in London you can try networking, recruiters, the odd cold email/phone call... but nothing comes along. It seems there are just no jobs out there.
However, I'm subscribed to a few job alerts sites -like efinancialcareers- and not a day passes by without a new couple of hedge fund roles on the other side of the pond.
-Anyone knows what is the deal with European -or generally non-US hedge funds-? Not many openings? All filled internally?
-I'm thinking about doing the CAIA certification... would this give me a little more access to the "hedge fund network?
-Any specific recruiters I could reach out to?
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks folks!
what does sell-side analyst mean? Are you a sales guy, are you a trader, what product etc.?
Equity research. Just updated the post. I would imagine is even tougher for sales people. Not sure about traders. I have seen a few roles up for distressed or special sits funds, but they obviously prefer M&A analysts.
There are a bunch of issues working against you:
1) Less funds 2) Funds having a rough time with outflows 3) Funds prefer experienced people with 5+ years of experience under the belt. 4) IBD professionals probably preferred to equity researchers. It's a pedigree issue. 5) Most openings never hit recruiters, let alone job boards. There is always "a great guy I know" to hire.
So yeah, maybe one day an opportunity will come your way, but don't hold your breath.
I assume you're going for Equities related roles but there hasn't been much hiring there in the past few years. Credit, Distressed, and PE funds have been hiring but your background would not really be suited there.
Disagree with UKtop on points #3 and #5 above.
Maybe I'm missing something here, have you gotten a job at a HF in the US?
Just because there's job alerts being posted in the US doesn't mean you're going to get them. Not sure where the US vs. Europe comparison comes in. Seems like you're having a hard time, at the very least because of macro headwinds in Europe and an equity research background. There could be a host of other issues as well. Maybe you're barking up the wrong trees, don't have a particularly compelling candidacy, aren't putting your best foot fwd on your rez, or any number of other factors working against you.
That’s precisely where the comparison comes in. In the US there are a lot of value or long-short hedge fund job alerts (I know I don’t stand much of a chance for those due to visa and other factors). In Europe there are just no openings (at least not advertised ones).
This is not just a “me having trouble” issue, but also the industry wide environment. I agree with Awon that there have been a few Credit, Distressed and PE jobs out there over the last year (still a fraction of a fraction of what you see in the US). But the more traditional funds are just not there.
A somehow related question, how do you find HF located in Europe besides the big names ? I'm having a hard time even trying to look for names. If someone would be kind enough to help me out I would be very grateful and will give away some bananas. I'm interested in Global Macro HF in Europe (Switzerland & London).
dacasale, I am trying to get into a IB, to be a equity research analyst. I am not a EU Citizen, so I am planning to do a master to put me into a IB. With all your experience, could give me some tips. I will appreciate that. Thank you so much
