The Merit of Canadian Qualifications for Foreign Firms
Hey Guys,
Nice to meet you all.
I'm a rising Canadian sophmore preparing for a career in i-banking. Right now, I'm in the midst of completing the Canadian Securities Course (CSC), it's roughly equivlent to the series exam but no where near the extensive materials tested for the CFA level 1.
Just wondering if taking these Canadian securities certifications will distinct myself from other prospective monkeys - especially for applying to foreign firms like Goldman, Lehman, Morgan... etc.
My career plan is to secure two summer analyst internships in preperations to working full time for a BB bank by the time I graduate.
Thanks for listening. Any imputs gladly appreciated.
Philip.
what school do you go to in Canada? there is decent canadian representation in the BBs, and sure go ahead and take the exam, put it on your resume, and you can explain what it is in your interviews, but more importantly, this won't distinguish your resume from others in getting the interview
if you go to the 3 main schools i hear about (Ivey at West. Ontario, Queens, McGill) you should already have a decent shot... it's just a matter of your marks and your experience. you're just a rising sophomore, so what are you doing this summer? also, thinking ahead, if you don't get an internship next summer (which is highly likely since working as a soph in banking is quite rare... esp for canadians), what will you do? there are some PE shops and small boutique firms that will hire sophs
if you don't go to the aforementioned 3 schools, don't get your hopes down. my roommate at training (for summers) at a BB went to Calgary, so as long as your marks are up there and you have strong experience, it can be done. worst-case, even if you don't end up getting a summer at a BB your soph and jr year, full-time is always more manageable than summer. work your ass off in school, get good experience next summer, network with alumni, learn as much as you can about finance so you can answer technical questions (Vault guide is good), and good luck!
Hey FreeCashFool,
Thanks a bunch for the advices.
I do attend Western, but I will not be in the Ivey program until my Jr./Sr. year (It's a two year program avaliable in the senior years). The school does have a fair representation of banking firms - I am just not certain whether these venues are restricted to the Ivey students.
As for my summer, I originally planned for a three-month stay in Venezuela collaborating with the locals on micro-financed-related grass root operations. But due to the passing of a loved one, I have stayed in Vancouver since May managing my parent's businesses while they return overseas to mourn. I take the opportunity in my spare time to learn more about finance (I am a philosophy major), and excel modelling.
So yeah... right now I am trying to do as much as I can with what I have.
I don't want this to be preceived as a sobre attempt to network, but do you mind if I keep in contact with you? You seem like you already have a few years of i-banking experiences under your belt. It seems there is still so much I don't know about i-banking.
Here's my e-mail address: [email protected]
And thanks again, Philip
P.S. As for those technical guides, I accquired both the Vault and Wetfeet over a year ago. I'll continue working my ass off. ;-)
don't waste your time with the csc. it is useless for the US. if you need to use that to demonstrate your interest in the industry you're way behind already
Fully agreed
Experience is good but difficult to get as a soph. Besides, all that matters in securing an internship throug Ivey is marks. The dean's honor list kids get the top jobs. If you are AEO, take this time to relax and bust your ass the first 4 months of Ivey.
