Not asking questions when they don't fully understand the work. Asking three questions over the same thing is not good, but never asking any questions is terrible. Because at some point, the summer will just be staring at a screen without any clue how to do his work which leads to more work on team's part. Ask a question to another analyst or intern if you need help and don't want to ask the team. But spinning your wheels is not productive.

I managed three analysts and did an AMA here: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/ama-just-finished-managing-3-sum…

I would say: show some enthusiasm for the work, be happy/grateful to be there.

Now, I don't mean you have to be grateful and kiss my ass. I mean that you may just be "trying out" this summer opportunity (in IB or otherwise) but this is what I have dedicated my life to and it's what I do because I love. Most of the people around the analyst (i.e. my colleagues) will be the same way. You're on a summer gig, we're not; we live for this stuff, we feed our families with this. So it goes the extra mile when the summer analysts show some enthusiasm for the job and gratitude for the opportunity.

Smile, never miss an opportunity to say hello, ask questions, be happy to be in the office, show enthusiasm for the work. Show us that you want to be here because you appreciate the results of the work just as much as we do.

Self awareness. Unfortunately, this is something that's not necessarily fixable in everyone. But essentially knowing what the people around you think of you, just based off signals and atmosphere and stuff. This will help you determine when to ask questions, what questions to ask and how to phrase them, who to ask questions to. The work matters in IB, but if you generally don't fit well with the other people in the office it's just not going to work out for you, so you might need to adapt a little bit to fit well.
