The ultimate case for immigration.

If your country's fertility rate is below 2.1 (due to children's mortality rate) and it's becoming extremely anti-immigration, have fun with massive population decrease over the next couple decades. I'm sure that'll be great for your economy.

Korea and Japan are watching you in horror.

There's a huge difference between anti-illegal immigration and anti-immigration and no ones for the latter.

America doesn't need more low skilled workers, but unfortunately a certain group of people are against merit based immigration and enforcing borders because it's "racist" in America, meanwhile almost every other country does it.

Exactly my point.

It seems to be a trend where people are questioning even merit-based immigration "cuz it lOwErS wages muh".

Just made this post to point out that if your country isn't reproducing enough, then you have no choice but to relax immigration to survive. Especially seems relatable in the developed world, where fertility rates have been climbing down very steeply, which seems like an irreversible trend xmconsidering the widespread social attitude around not having children.

Korea and Japan are facing an existential crisis with super low birth rates. They are forced to accept more immigrants than they are comfortable with.

 no ones for the latter.

This may have been true 10 years ago within the GOP, but it's patently false now. The Trump administration has moved to reduce legal immigration, work visas, and legitimate asylum claims. It's now a nationalist/preservationalist identity party, long term GDP growth be damned.

Tbh, the US population probably won't decrease for the next 3-4 decades. But imagine the rest of the world's population going up while the US population stagnates.

Not to mention by then, thebUS would have to worry a lot more than China as economic rivlas.  (ahem Brazil and Indonesia).

The short-term consequences of being anti high skill immigration is making sure people who are making $150K now will make be making $200K (like that's really gonna help out the country). Long-term consequences? You create a giant complacent workforce that can't compete with the rest of the world.

Maybe there's a reason beyond orange man bad? Maybe your second point has to do with corporations (particularly big tech) flagrantly abusing these work visa programs to undercut wages and jobs for American workers? Sure, these visa programs are intended for "high skill" workers, but unfortunately, that's not the case in reality.

As someone who's currently trying to immigrate stop giving him MS - he's absolutely right. Trump is cracking down hard on any sort of immigration and he's created so much hassle/red tape that very few companies are willing to sponsor anymore.

It also sucks that the only visa available is the H1-B: an American-system educated student has no real advantage versus someone who's never stepped foot into this country.

The reality whether most people want to admit - most merit-based immigration is non-white and with the republican party going full white nationalist, it's no surprise that they're doing this.

America doesn't need more low skilled workers

With the thousands (or millions?) of either under or unemployed college majors, I would argue the opposite. There are TOO many high skilled people and not that many high skilled jobs available. Hell, this entire forum exists under the premise that it is challenging to land a high paying job in finance.

The average American-born citizen end up going to college, and I don't think that's because they want to do low skilled labor - most of it is done by illegal immigrants, who have no qualification to get high paying jobs.

What’s wrong with encouraging birth rates?

Why does the solution, when the birth rate drops below replacement, have to be “shit, import people ASAP!”

It’s not the most ethical thing in the world to brain drain the programmers from India, or doctors from Belarus. They need them for their own economic development and wellbeing.

Because importing people is the easiest solution.

How do you get thebentire population to have more babies? That's an incredibly difficult problem to solve.

If it were so easy, Korea and Japan won't be opening their borders and just about letting anyone migrate.

Oh no, housing prices will fall because of a decrease in demand, I'm crying...

Labour supply is now at an all-time low?? guess we have to increase wages, this is terrible...

You're telling me we will have fewer people driving cars, and polluting our lands and seas?? This is outrageous...

You mean to tell me we won't have an oversaturated market of college grads who can't find jobs because everyone has the same qualifications??? I am in complete shock...

I hope you learned in your Econ class the concept of diminishing returns . Greater economic potential as a whole does not imply greater economic potential per capita. Once scarce resources are used , the marginal benefit starts to decrease. A good example of what I am trying to say is average quality of life in NYC versus a rural hometown. For comparison the median household in NYC earns $64,000 while the median household in South Dakota earns $56,000. I don’t think it’s difficult to know which median household is having a better life. Yet the economy of NYC is far greater and more developed than your average town in South Dakota.

Lol okay guy. Let's import a bunch of non Americans that breed like rats so that in 50 years America is filled with non Americans...

How about we focus on incentives for Americans (e.g. tax benefits for households with X amount of children)

Why did I leave the GOP and won't look back? Because of human garbage like this guy ^

"I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people."

Probably bc your testosterone dropped significantly.

Seriously - why is it crazy to figure out a solution for our own people first? What's so outlandish about that? If the discussion was about a lack of scientists, for example, I could understand the need to import scientists, but we're talking about the birth decline of our nation. Of our people.

Think of it this way. America is great bc of Americans and our culture. Why do ppl go on vacation to Japan, Spain, Italy, etc? To experience and enjoy a different culture. But now what if these countries were majority non-natives, would the cuture still remain? The answer is no. So then what would be the point of going to them then? To mindlessly visit another geographical area of land?

This is basically the answer here as to why Republicans hate any kind of immigration - this take would be very different if it was European migrants. And no one is advocating for "importing" - all we're arguing is to allow a controlled flow of high skill labor from other countries to come in?

FYI, 2nd gen immigrants are usually pretty darn American. It's just a racial thing and that's painfully obvious. And you wonder why minorities vote democrat vs republican.

Minorities vote Democrat because the Democrat party touts itself as “the party of equality”. The same party of course that legitimize systemic discrimination of Asians, pushed “planned parenthood” into Black communities to reduce the Black population, mentally degraded Blacks by making them believe they need “White help” to succeed, and supporting criminals and looters that have ravaged communities. The tide is starting to change however. Trump with his criminal justice reform initiative and economic opportunity zones has gained unprecedented Black support for the Republican Party. People who keep saying the GOP is a white nationalist party are living under a rock. Among those who vote Republican this cycle, we’re set to see the percentage of those who are White to be the smallest in decades.

Yeah, I think part of it is racially motivated...  You do not look like us or sound like us, therefore you can possibly be a good fit for us.

I know that it is good for the US to have more high skilled labor but in a way, I am more opposed to immigration focused on high skill because these people compete with us in schools and in high paying jobs.  I think immigrants with low skill take the jobs that many Americans do not want.

In 50 years those "non Americans" will have become Americans.

As for incentive programs to make sure people have more babies, they are very very difficult to get right. Plenty of attempts have been tried in Korea and Japan. None of them seems to have worked.

There also is a huge cultural element ingrained in to the society that it becomes ridiculously hard to make any meaningful changes. In the meantime, relaxing up immigration is just a low-haning fruit. It comes with its own risks but it's the easiest solution out there. (Unless no one wants to come to your country)
