A friend of mine in Asia was interning at a prestigious bank. It was recruiting season and his boss had stack of junior-level resumes several inches thick on his desk. The boss looked at my friend, then looked at the stack, then grabbed half of the stack randomly and threw the resumes straight into his garbage bin.

"Why did you do that? No one has even read those yet." My friend asked.

To this the boss replied: "I don't want unlucky people working at my firm."

True story.

LOL, that was great.

I interned on a derivatives desk in London. I heard this story. Note that UK stock prices are quoted in pence (the British equivalent of cents) and individual shares are generally quite cheap compared to the US market.

A very junior dealer, fresh out of training, sits at his desk during lunch. He's green as hell and waiting for the day that he'll finally get to have some responsibility greater than picking up lunch. His boss -- a more senior dealer responsible for hedging the firm's positions -- blackberries him a message.

"get the desk some Cadbury, I wont pay more than 6 pounds. Hurry."

The junior dealer is ecstatic. The firm has a tiny short position in Cadbury and the share price is just above 600p. It's an easy hedge, a no-brainer for the first trade of his career. The junior puts in a limit to buy a small order of Cadbury at 600 and waits anxiously for the order to execute.

Meanwhile, his boss returns to the desk in a foul mood and starts looking around his station for something. He looks at the junior:

"I told you to go out and buy me some fucking chocolates, where the hell are they!?"

This sounds like BS to me, but it would be hilarious if it actually happened. Only one thing is true for sure, my boss used to send me on chocolate runs all the time.

  • Cadbury currently quoted at 653.50

It's because the finance industry, while dynamic, is finite after all. Plus, finance ain't rocket science. That's why the same questions will circle back again and again - when is on-cycle kicking off this year? Which firm kicked off on-cycle? Has anyone done the JPM AC? My MBA associate is a tosser. Etc etc etc

Not to mention finance is pretty self-selecting, PLUS the double self-selection of the people who choose to use this forum instead of focusing more on recruiting/ working/ connecting with their loved ones. You'd expect the humor and lore of these forums to be pretty recurrent honestly

cuz my man was ahead of his time - he predicted that 15 years later our mods would become soft and woke and start censoring shit here and there. Alas, Ragnarok has come. The end of WSO! A sad ending to a glorious kingdom of banter and camaraderie.

WSO is not a place, it is a people.

Many of the main contributors to off topic have been restricted or have left.  Not sure why off topic needed to give a priority to career advice.  There are other forums dedicated to career advice.

trying_my_best

yes. Honestly find it very sad. The mods need to take a good hard look at themselves. Or at least give an explanation at what they're doing man, ffs

Join us, won't you? I hope you have your smoking jacket on, as ironically as we watch our WSO world burn vs our cigar butts. You and I never quite squared up head to head before but wer'e supposed to be able to hash it out, but here we are. Unfortunately.

The poster formerly known as theAudiophile. Just turned up to 11, like the stereo.

Mods have killed WSO, only stuff allowed is generic content. Lot of great posters have either left as a result or massively cut back on their usage. I'm debating leaving myself, there's just not much worth staying for anymore
