Thoughts on NYU MBA program
I will be applying for an MBA in finance next fall at NYU. I want to break into sales and trading at a big bank. Is NYU still a top tier school and do banks recruit from here? Or should I look elsewhere?
Thanks

Great for banking recruitment. Most get something, and the best candidates are able to compete with Columbia candidates. Banks generally reserve a certain amount of spots for each business school based on alumni and HR allocations on what they view as a target. NYU being in New York naturally makes you a target even if CBS is higher ranked.
Side note that surprised me during recruiting at NYU as an associate, past experience definitely does help fit breaking into banking in MBA, and some EBs prefer past experience but it is still very possible to get your foot in the door at a solid mid to upper tier group if you are personable and network well.
It does well in IB recruiting and should work out if you put your best foot forward. I haven't heard good things about the culture at NYU Stern but I'm working with a small sample size (3) so could be wrong.
NYU Stern has top 3 placements for IB in the Northeast region. But Sales & Trading? Unusual path as MBAs don't go into S&T. S&T is more so Msc in Fin/undergrad. Others can correct me if I am wrong on the last part.
NYU is a target for all the NYC banks. If you prep hard and do your networking work, you'll get looks from all the banks. IB is usually the typical path, with less demand for ER. However, S&T is not a typical path for MBAs anymore. Most banks pulled back from MBA hiring over the past 10 yrs and typically source juniors (undergrads / MSF candidates) for these roles.
What’s the best way to get into S&T then without any finance background?
You will need to look at MSF programs - not MBA programs for Sales & Trading. MITs - Masters in Finance, Princeton's - Masters in Finance, Vanderbilts - Masters in Finance.
Also these programs start at "Analyst" Level, while MBA starts at Associate level. If you already have 3-4+ years of experience, MSF program does not make sense for you. Your route with MBA will be working as an Investment Banker, not as a Sales & Trader.
Personally have had not so great experience with their current students/alumni. Very stingy in terms of those trying to network with them.
Could get very comparable banking opportunity at Cornell's program. From networking, much more engaging and open to help prospective applicants.
It's all relative. NYU is a good school and gets good looks from investment banks if that is what you want to do. would check the employment reports though - S&T doesn't really hire MBAs any more so if that is really what you want to do, maybe there is a better degree for that
Which degree would that be ?
