Thoughts on storming of Capitol by Trump supporters

What does everyone think of this? It was so hard to concentrate at work today; just was refreshing twitter constantly.

It's pretty messed up how lightly law enforcement treated the protestors, especially after we all saw how they treated some of the George Floyd protesters back in June. Glad some control is being reclaimed and hope they throw the book at the folks who entered the Capitol.

Just learned about this.

I was sure there would be some kind of pro-Trump riot once they realized Biden did really win. Didn't think they'd try to take over the freaking Capitol

This is scary stuff people (channeling my inner Dan Carlin here). If this kind of behavior gets normalized, it might as well as mean the end of American democracy and liberty we all enjoy. Imagine 4 or 8 years later a Republican candidate winning the presidency and SJWs storm the Capitol all because "MAGA crowd did it first muh".

It doesn't matter who did it. It matters that it happened.

If the events of the past year or so proves anything, it proves that diehard SJWs and diehard MAGA are pretty much the same group - they don't respect the law and they're not afraid to use violence. They will tear shit apart if given the chance. Modern day Commies vs Fascists indeed.

I want to look back 50 years later and reminisce the early 2020s as the years America almost fell, not as the years America fell.

I'd argue it has been normalized to some degree (the capital is obviously the most extreme case of this).

With all the rioting and looting this past summer in Portland and Minneapolis. They weren't in response to an election but they created a large amount of damage. In 2016 in place like Seattle had intense rioting and looting in response to Trump being elected (again not even close to the degree of raiding the capital).

The loudest voices in the room right now are the extreme left and the extreme right. Until people decide to find common ground and block out those voices I don't see things getting better.

Idk enough about who did the looting. But I heard some opinions that most looters weren't even part of the protest, but assholes just trying to stir shit up. But it's really hard to tell and some protestors were definitely part of the violence.

Agreed with the fact that far left and the far right are the loudest yet the smallest crowd. I think the real danger is how all the noise impacts the young and naive (often the same). The far extreme might be a minority now but what about 10-20 years down the road? Imagine kids in school browsing the web and getting introduced to extremist ideas (whether left or right).

Whole situation is a joke! If there ever was a harbinger of things to come, it would be violence last night between Trump supporters and police in Washington. How more police were not deployed initially to prevent a breach is a mystery. Today he held his rally just before the counting of the votes not too far away from the Capitol, but the police still managed to be undermanned and underprepared. And suddenly, the militant police have no rubber bullets and no teargas to disperse crowds.

Controversial

I'm a Chinese so I don't have a dog in the fight. Trying to give my (hopefully) unbiased opinion on this:

The BLM rioters are more violent than the Trump mobs, that's for sure. The BLM rioters loot private stores, in a larger scale. The Trump mobs, although in a smaller scale, stormed the Capitol. Not saying that I don't respect private properties, but storming the Capitol is a whole different level. So the BLM rioters are more violent and move in larger scale, they commit "lesser" crimes, while the Trump mobs, although less violent and smaller in scale, their crime is next level.

Another thing to note here, which I think can be the key difference, is that not all "BLM rioters" are Democrats. Lots of them are opportunists trying to take advantage of chaos to enrich themselves. Violent Trump mobs, on the other hand, are almost 100% Trump supporters and Republicans.

This is a dangerous and dumb way of rationalizing.

Which one is worse, Commies or Fascists? Good answer is that it doesn't matter because they're both extremely dangerous groups who caused massive amount of suffering. Dumb question to to begin with.

It's like asking people is it better to kill 10 million people or 5 million people. It somehow makes killing 5 million people "okay".

I would agree that its worse on a micro level but on a macro level I'd disagree. The riots and looting this past summer showed just how out of hand things get in a short amount of time. If you're a bad person or trying to enact chaos that can only put ideas in your head as to how to expose the system moving forward (not trying to blame the riots and looting on what happened today).

Fast forward to today with the capitol being stormed and exposing some of the flaws in our system. Small business owners losing their livelihoods from riots/looting is no joke, however the capitol is more symbolic and representative of our country across the world. Unfortunately some very bad people are going to analyze what transpired today and start looking for holes in the system and set their eyes on their next targets when they try to attack us.

Let's be real here.  It is shocking to me how protestors were allowed to occupy the Capitol for such a long period of time.  Armed forces should have been called in immediately.  If the protestors were black, the police would have been firing at them.  While the police have a very difficult job at times, they have murdered black citizens for much less egregious offenses.  If there is ever a reason to use your fire arms, it would be when the US Capitol is under attack.

Yes, let's be real. After allowing 6 months of protests around the country, it's very hard to argue that  the police would have opened fire on a black crowd but not a white crowd.  Whole problem is that we've normalized violent protests for everyone. People have figured out that there appear to be few to no consequences to violent protests.

Maybe you should look up how many rioters have been arrested. Also the fact that the police don't shoot blacks because they are afraid to and they don't shoot whites because they do not want to is everything wrong with this country.

Mike Pence unfollowed Trump on Twitter and set his cover photo to Biden / Harris. I’m dying 🤣😂🤣

Weren't Floyd protesters much worse?

From what I saw, pro-Trump protesters broke like 2 windows and fooled around inside the Capitol. But that's it. They didn't kill nobody, didn't rob nobody, didn't steal anything, didn't burn any property.

Floyd protesters were breaking into private businesses and emptying them out, stealing, robbing, and burning down property. And politicians were actually supporting this behavior.

Facepalm x 100...

Someone already made a similar comment so I'm gonna say the same thing.

What's better? Killing 10 million people or 5 million people? Of course everyone's gonna say killing 5 million people, as if that's somehow "okay". The truth is that's an ill-formed question in the first place. It's the Fascists vs Commies all over again.

It doesn't matter who's worse because they both did terrible things and caused a massive amount of suffering.

yeah, I'm just replying to OP.

he said:
"It's pretty messed up how lightly law enforcement treated the protestors, especially after we all saw how they treated some of the George Floyd protesters back in June".

and I'm just replying that it makes sense that police was more chill with people fooling around the Capitol than with people breaking into private businesses and emptying them out, stealing, robbing, and burning down property.

but yeah, both are bad, I'm on board.

True but that doesn't invalidate that degree still matters. Your example is a bit of hyperbole. In 5 million versus 10 million, there is no difference in the act as the numbers are so huge.

However, a 15-year old kid who shoots someone in a drug deal is not the same as Charles Manson. Or a person that kills one person is not the same as someone who kills 1,000.

Or a riot that covers 2 city blocks is not the same as one that covers 30 cities and 100s of blocks.

I see the difference. In the first case hardworking business owners lose their livelihood that they worked for their whole life, and employees lose jobs because the businesses close, and the criminals go away with it. In the second case, everything goes back to normal within a couple of hours, and the protesters (some of whom sincerely believe they're trying to prevent a voter fraud) get their lives ruined.

Absolutely chilling.

Regardless of what side you're on or where you are in the world, this is an alarming precedent. m_1 touched on this, but consider the fact that an uncontrolled mob of people gained access to the fucking capitol. They were in the chambers stealing shit. They were sitting in Senator offices. Imagine the sensitive documents and materials that they could have had access to. How the fuck were they allowed to gain entry? There's videos of police letting them pass the barriers outside.

Another alarming fact is that markets didn't respond in any big way. If you told me that the fucking US Capitol building was overrun by an angry mob, I would have expected markets to dive and safe havens to moon. Didn't happen.

An angry mob gained access to supposedly one of the more secure sites in the US. A woman was shot and killed inside the building. This is pure insanity.

This picture from Reuters looks like something out of a fucking movie. This looks like a screenshot from the Purge.

Look at this image - this guy looks like a fucking fallout character. Not something I ever expected to see in the US in my lifetime. You read about this type of shit happening in third-world countries ruled by dictators and tyrants, not in the supposed economic center of the free world.

looks like fun to me. it's not like these politicians are doing anything useful in there anyway. so why not let people dressed like video game characters fool around there for a couple of hours.

in the 3rd world countries innocent people are getting killed for their political views. in the 1st world country we let people express their opinions and protest (even to the extent of occupying the Capitol for a couple of hours).

My thoughts from someone who leans right but mostly just cares about capitalism and low taxes

- this is HORRIBLE optics for the right. the kinds of people occupying this protest are the caricature of the party. No teeth, fat, gross, redneck, etc. This is now what people (i.e. the media) will equate a lot of more moderate trump voters with

- it took 5 minutes for this to become a race issue. what the fuck

- Trump being banned from twitter was an assault on free speech. I don't care how you feel about him but that is unacceptable for the leader of a nation to be deplatformed, and this will normalize censoring more and more voices.

People continually complain about Congress being corrupt yet cry for the safety of politicians when rioters break into the Capitol building.

Capitol building is just a safe space for politicians to have their pathetic group therapy sessions. Don't worry, that building is insured.

If only you cared about the small businesses and private property that was destroyed by ANTIFA rioters last year.
