Thoughts on Work for Free to get a Hedge Fund Internship?
Hello!I am currently a sophomore student at a non target college. I live in New York City. I was wondering would hedge funds allow me to work for them if I offer to work for free. I don't care about the money. I want experience on my resume as it is a stepping stone to getting into a hedge fund full time. But yeah I'm willing to work for free to add experience to the resume
No. It devalues yourself first, and second, no hedge fund is *not* hiring you because of concern about the salary outlay. You are being trained and mostly a use of resources for the first 6-12 months
Not sure how prevalent it is anymore, but in the past I got something similar just based on cold-emailing. Probably still possible. I think its a viable option, especially if you are coming from a non-target (since you need the leg up), and especially for the summer after sophomore year (since its really hard to get something that summer unless you are a diversity candidate). At the same time, no reason to not put your best foot forward for paid internships as well- you'll have to do a bit more due diligence on what the role actually is if its some unpaid role.
