Throwback: Google Launches Company To CURE Death

Yep, you read that title right. Although this happened five years ago, Google is still at it - with recent findings that the Naked Mole Rat's risk of death does NOT increase with age.

Google wants to extend our lives, with the ultimate goal: to one day cure (prevent) death. They launched a new company called "Calico," headed by former CEO of biotech company Genentech. Google is actually going for it, straight out of your scifi fantasies.

Google CEO Larry Page wrote, "OK … so you're probably thinking wow! That's a lot different from what Google does today. And you're right. But as we explained in our first letter to shareholders, there's tremendous potential for technology more generally to improve people's lives. So don't be surprised if we invest in projects that seem strange or speculative compared with our existing Internet businesses. And please remember that new investments like this are very small by comparison to our core business."

Calico is an abbreviation for the "California Life Company," but if you're thinking about cats, we like the old saying that they have nine lives...

So it's now almost five years later; realistically - do you guys seeing us ever advancing technology to the point that we have defeated death? Whether that's via transferring consciousness or preventing degradation of the body, (dunno, maybe one day there will be a way to replace organs, blood cells, etc. at a 100% efficiency) anything is game.
