Tips on living in Seattle

I will be moving to Seattle after I graduate for a Corp dev gig, and wanted to get thoughts from people that have experience in the city.

  1. Best neighborhoods to live in?

  2. What is there to do in the city?

  3. Is a car needed?

Any other insight helpful as well! Thanks!

Lived here all my life and have a couple takes. For living area, don’t go Capitol Hill Fremont or any of those areas, unless ur more hippy type, in which case u will love those areas. Bellevue is nice, most don’t live downtown though. That and the rest of the eastside (Redmond issiquah sammamish) are the nice family suburbs. If you are the type to live out away from people, snoqualmie north bend is nice, not too far from the city, but that is definitely more desolate and away from everything. If you have money, live on lake Washington or sammamish. I don’t live in the lake right now, but trust me it’s worth it if u can afford it. Other tips, some people get depressed in the winter by the bad weather, but a lot of Seattleites who know what they r doing actually love the winter, because we have amazing skiing. u can go night skiing at snoqualmie after work, and take a day trip to stevens, crystal, or Baker (the best) in weekends. Tons of other places nearby like whistler if u r going for longer. Seattle has amazing summers, warm but not broiling. Seattleites with money tow boats, and go out on lake sammamish or Washington and wakesurf, tune, etc. It is amazing, and rivals a day at an ocean beach (might be better).Other tips, don’t say anything conservative in public unless u want to be harassed by a mob. Areas south of the city, tukwilla, kent, Tacoma, or to far north, everett, mukilteo, suck and r the hood. Rainier beach and white center r also considered the hood. They might not be Compton, but u don’t want to live there. Lynwood also kinda sucks for the most part. There’s also a lot more great outdoors stuff, like mountain biking (some of the best in the world), hiking, paddling, and more. People in general care more about that type of stuff then shopping or artificial stuff. Flip side is, the girl/guy situation has a bad rap, as it’s just kinda of a city full of ugly people for both guys and girls, lol. Definitely wouldn’t worry too much about that tho, as there are still plenty of attractive people. Other things to know, people love UW or WSU, big rivalry, but WSU is a tradh party school, looks super fun, but UW is a solid state school. Aldo, visit Vancouver when it opens up, it is a super cool city woth a great downtown (unlike Seattle) and is worth the visit. Also, heads up, if you go to Portland, it’s wierd. No other way to say it, jus tstraight up communist hippie wierd. Also, people love their weed and craft beers here, jus round of a thing. Also, we r getting an nhl team next year, and ppl r die hard Seahawks fans, nobody cares that much about soccer, and a little about the mariners. Fonally, be prepared for a cultural shock, as we possibly hve more Indians and Asians than whites, cuz of the tech companies, and have less Mexicans and African Americans. Not saying that’s good or bad, it’s just a thing. Lemme know if you have any more questions.

Everett is the hood? You’re either extremely soft or you haven’t been there

Relative to Seattle it is... like I said, it isn't Compton... Also, Everett is a very mixed area. Some of it is fine, a large part of it is shitty, like around the stadium and east into the neighborhoods. Also, growing up in Seattle, I can tell you what residnets in each area were like. The schools in Everett were shit, and the most the kids were broke or damn near close, and there was a significant amount of violence, that I witnessd, including guns and shootings. Far from soft, I have actually witness the shit that has happened there, and it IS NOT pretty. A mutual friend was actually murdered there in an event related to gang violence, so I would not consider that a soft area.

What about Hondurans and El Salvadorians or is it just very few Mexicans?

Very few Latinos in general. It is mostly Indians, Asians, and Whites.

It is a beutiful area, on the water with the Locks (the area that allows boat to go from the lake to Puget Sound), but it will most likely be extremly expensive and it is more liberal like Fremont, but not to the same extent. Overall it is a nice area, and if you go nearby to Magnolia, that is actually an extremly upscale big money area. The thing with Seattle is it is kind of a mixed bag, and more so than other cities. Some areas are extremly upscale and world class, like Medina, Magnolia, andwhere on Lake Washington or Sammamish, and more. You also have nice places like Bellevue or Bell Town that are cool. Than you have Freemont and Capital Hill, which are super hippy and wouldn't reccomend, and then you have areas in Everett, Kent, Tuckwilla, Tacoma and other areas that are trully shit. Would highly recomend visiting before coming to any judgements, as everybody has a very different taste in which areea they like.

You write like a middle schooler and there's a lot of misinformation here.

And one other place to live is Mercer Island, which is a very Jewish part of town; is in between bellevue and Seattle, has a lot of money, and is on the water. It’s very nice, but also expensive.

I'm from there but haven't lived there for ~15 years

Traffic is a mess so try to live close to work. If you'll be working downtown check out lower queen anne area to live, it's very easy to get back and forth. If you want a more upscale neighborhood try Bell Town, or for something more funky try Ballard/Fremont. It's probably all overpriced but so is the rest of Seattle.

Plenty to do if you're into outdoorsy stuff, hiking / skiing etc

If you're into hockey now would be a good time to get in on inuagral season tickets

What else is popular... seahawks/sounders, micro brews, weed industry, live music scene,

Befriend someone who has a boat and/or a cabin on one of the islands, essential for July-Sept

Prepare for long gray rainy winters (with sunsets before 5pm), Nov - March. Try to get away for some long weekends in Jan Feb to somewhere warm/sunny, that'll help a lot. Spring is rainy but nice, summer doesn't typically start until after 4th of July.

Yes you'll need a car.

Start browsing r/seattlewa on reddit to get a feel of the local vibe

Also google the "seattle freeze", its' a real thing

....throwing bricks at police.

Jokes aside, the recent protests have been terrible publicity for the city. Thought of visiting the place a while back and even had it on a list of places to potentially re-locate one day, Not anymore. No thanks. Want nothing to do with Seattle.
