This question is for all Americans on WSO. I know that when you guys hear the word football, you automatically think of American Football. But what if someone was talking about soccer, but called it football? Would average people even realize that this is the name of soccer in other countries? Would they find it strange or funny? What if a European did this at a networking event for example?

I mean, part of networking is realizing the customs of where you.
For example, if it's considered a bad idea to shake hands in a culture, but you do it because "that's the way we do it in America", you still did an offensive gesture.
I'm European and can say that I think Americans would understand by context. If someone says 'Did you see the Man U football match' it sure as shit won't be an NFL team.

Honestly, if the person has a Latin American or European accident, I just assume they're talking about soccer when they say football.

Agreed with the above. Context + accent and the educated class will know what you're talking about. But, uh, the U.S. is a big fucking country. There will be a lot of dumb, stupid, moronic people who will not have the faintest idea what you're talking about. A decent portion of Americans couldn't tell you who the President of the United States is or even name the U.S. capital city. So, I wouldn't take for granted anything.
As if this is different anywhere. Majority of people in this world have a 5th grade reading level.

I would think football if it were an american (or possibly a canadian) but definitely soccer if they were clearly from somewhere else. Otherwise, I would need to listen further or clarify. It has happened to me on travels when I will meet someone at a bar and be talking about the Patriots and they're just looking at me like "wtf is this dude talking about."
