Too much to invite MD to dinner?

I work in asset management. There's been an MD alum whose helped me along the way in getting an internship in the firm. We've exchanged emails a bunch of times and I visited his office to talk for about an hour. We're on pretty good terms.

Before I go back to school I'd like to meet him again. He told me to schedule a time with him. Now I want to switch sides and go to IBD so it's crucial that I tell him and maybe he can refer me to some contacts.

Should I go visit him at his office or invite him to lunch/dinner? Is it too much to ask for to ask an MD to eat dinner?

haha.

Honestly a dinner is a bad idea not only because it's a bit "too much" as other people have said but also because it would be too long. You want to meet the guy, make a good impression then get out. A long dinner increases the chance of awkward silences or you spilling or saying something stupid. Plus I never met with an MD or higher for more then 15-25 minutes, they're too busy for that.

on that note, is it better to ask for a coffe/lunch session near the office or ask to visit the office? Assume that I already have some connections/prior meetings with them.

If you've never met with a VP/MD for longer than 15-25 minutes, how can you expect them to know you/want to help you?

Thanks

If you already met with this guy multiple times he pretty much has an impression of you good or bad. This meeting is just to seal the deal and try to get an interview. Coffee usually works. When I asked any of my coworkers to coffee it usually lasted atleast 30 minutes. 30 minutes it more then enough time to have decent small talk, spit out what you have to say and thank him for the summer.

Thats not going to be up to you. You need to give him the choice and do whatevers easier for him.

15-25 minutes is more then enough time to make a good, or bad, impression. Since you know this guy already thats even better because you can get to the point even quicker.
