Top Bank vs. Top MF
I am fortunate enough to have gotten SA offers from a couple of top banks (2 of PJT RX/EVR RX/Moelis LA) and a top MF (BX/SLP/Bain). My goal is eventually to get to a top HF. Is there an advantage to any of the potential options? Or should I choose based on fit?
They're all great options. I think the PE experience might be slightly better overall. You'll actually get investing experience from it. But some of the PE funds don't want you to leave after two years, so recruiting might be awkward for you. Also the RX groups are better if you want a distressed exit. No real wrong choice though.
If you want to be on the buyside - skip banking if you have the chance. You'll learn the modeling you'll need at the MF and you'll be good to go for HFs. Can't speak to the recruiting after 2 years problem tho.
I'd probably take the MF offer if you know there's a good chance you'll get a return. The experience at a MF is just more relevant and honestly more interesting than that at a bank. I don't think there is a huge issue with recruiting 2 years down the line if you take the MF but could be wrong. If you choose any of those banks, though, you'll have a great chance at getting into a HF or MF 2 years down the line (especially PJT Rx).
If you got SLP or BX, I'd take either of those over anything else.
