Top Groups at Goldman Sachs
Hi,
I know there has been a thread on this before but it seemed like most of the content was from five years ago. I was wondering if anyone had any updated impressions on top groups at GS besides FIG/ TMT.
Thanks

Based on what?
Exit Opps and Culture
any group at GS will be fine i have a few friends in TMT and obviously they're extremely qualified (one had an IB summer at BofA his summer freshman year- which i didn't even know was possible)
but he told me that pretty much any group has good exits as long as you're ranked well as an analyst
Bump
TMT and C&R are two really good groups.
How is the Industrial group?
Industrials is a great group ( tons of deal flow and companies have diverse operational structures, leading to really fulsome understanding ), but horrible culture and analysts get run into the ground. Rare to see analysts stick around for too long.
Bit of a brand whore, but I'd take most groups at GS.
Unless, of course, I had a Nomura offer.
How is HC?
There are only 5 classic groups, so “besides TMT and FIG” is pretty constraining.
TMT (NY and SF) and FIG have insane exits. CRH has good pe placement, and NR has good PE, distressed and HF placement Industrials is probably the least sought after but still send people to KKR/Apollo every year
What about Energies/O&G?
what’s FIG?
Financial Institutions Group. Covers clients like banks and insurance companies.
why is Industrials the least sought?
Probably because their other groups are so coveted and impressive. GS Industrials is still worth taking in my opinion. Maybe Industrials' potential placement in Chicago/Houston may be less desirable for some people too. Just a few things to consider.
This has nothing to do with it, you apply specifically for the Chicago office if you want to work there. There is no Industrials group in Houston.
Industrials has good deal flow, but it’s a painful group to be in (culture & hours). Exits are good though.
Bad culture and the industry overall is less glamorous (media vs. flow control, etc.)
so Industrials won't get you into NY? in 2 years
Oh, it could. I'd imagine you could leverage any IBD experience at GS into competitive buy-side opportunities. I'm simply saying that the other groups may be considered more prestigious given the nature of the industry they cover (perceived as more interesting and more deal flow) and the particular cities (i.e., I think most analysts want NYC over a Chicago or SF whereas a post-MBA associate may be more open to other cities) .
GS Industrials has arguably the strongest dealflow of any of the classic coverage groups. They work with sponsors a ton and do a ton of M&A. Tough reputation culture-wise though.
would Health Care be better than Industrials?
Bump
Went to school on the west coast, the SF and LA groups are very legit. Idk about Chicago.
SSG
Do they still recruit for that? I thought they had stopped.
Know a person who's interning there for junior SA, diversity candidate
Pretty much every GS IB groups are good. Really just comes down to culture of group (Industrials is known for being rough while CRG is considered more lifestyle). Exit opp is more dependent on the GS analyst than group
What about their LevFin group?
LevFin seems legit from what I have heard there. BAML and JPM I think beat them out for LevFin however...
Second tier vs. European BB Lev Fin teams and BAML. On par with MS Lev Fin. Obviously coverage at GS (and M&A group at MS) is better than at other BBs
Is this more to the cap markets nature of the role? Thought they do quite a lot of deals in EMEA
Lev fin groups are getting "better" and better (by what I think your definition is, i.e. exit opps / prestige), but the experience is still vastly different on a pod-to-pod basis.
Just from a few linkedin searches, people from GS LevFin place incredibly well at UMM / MFs if that helps. I think most people talk about coverage at gs but it's crazy to think they're levfin arguably places better than a lot of the coverage groups in pe recruiting
Is there anyone on this threat who can actually share any first hand legit insight?
how is GS's private credit group?
.
Can you please explain why "GS tends to not hire huge finance hardos but rather just brilliant people overall" meant that GS Industrials had the best exits this cycle?
.
it also is related to industrials being the most brutal coverage and attracting grinders
Anyone know about Goldman C&R? How have they been doing lately? Reputation? Placement?
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the consumer & retail group has been merged with healthcare. Now they are known as "Consumer Retail Healthcare".
I thought the two split recently but I could be wrong
Can confirm HC is 100% separate
