Top PE firms prior to Elite HF
Hi All,
Hoping to start a discussion on what the community thinks are some of the best private equity firms to go to prior to joining the public markets, at an elite hedge fund (L/S Fundamental).
It seems as though Silver Lake, KKR, Apollo, and Blackstone, in particular, do well, but am curious to hear if there are any others that stand out too.
Cheers,
just to bump -- also seems like Centerbridge is a good stopping point for the public markets. Any others? Maybe UMM or MM funds that, for various reasons, place well too?
The MF's are the best bet given that's the feeder for large HFs as you mentioned. But other MM or UMM funds which are specialized in a certain industry may also fare well in recruiting given the industry knowledge you could bring to the table
Why not go straight for a HF ?
1. Anecdotally, and based on a Linkedin search, HF's like Tiger Cubs, Pershing Square, Third Point, etc. etc., seem to primarily draw from private equity associate pools.
2. Perhaps the first reason is because of this, but there is also the impression that working in a private equity environment for several years helps give a deep understanding of a company, from an operational and due diligence perspective, which is hard to replicate naturally on the public market side, but highly valuable for being able to evaluate businesses.
Yep true if you want to go into a top tier activist HF then the best way is via 2 years at a top PE fund. However, getting into a top SM / MM is possible straight out of IBD
