Track Days/Road Racing
Curious if anyone here goes to track days or competes in road races. I’m working on my license and planning to compete in the NASA GTS category.

I do the occasional autocross in my area and try to get track time whenever it's possible/affordable. My track time consists of mostly HPDE type stuff, but have done time attack in the past within the street class.
Also still in college, so I'm sure the amount of time I have will diminish greatly once I start full-time.
How’d you first get into autoX and HPDE?
Got into cars/racing when I was younger. When I started driving in high school, I started to look for events/tracks that were in my area and autoX was the closest thing it had to road racing (my area is very rural, a lot of dirt track stuff which I wasn't interested in). As I went to more events, I wanted to get time on an actual track so I started to look for close racetracks and the cheapest option most had was HPDE.
Hopefully in the future, I would love to do an actual track day/race type event.
I go apex hunting from time to time..... Mostly events sponsored by BMW though (M Track Days @ Monticello Motor Club) or going down to the Performance Center in South Carolina..... last I went was 3 weeks ago, spent a lot of time driving the M2 M4 & M8.
On a side note the M8 is a beast. I drove the competition coupe and am completely sold on it.
Getting a license is on my radar at some point......what platform are you going with?
The M8 looks sick. Jealous.
Did the M8 feel heavy at all? I see them around occasionally and they just look massive compared to the old M6 which is what it's replaced.
That's the shocking part. The M8 ZCP Coupe did not feel heavy whatsoever. It felt agile for sure. Handled really well. Power is next level.
I have driven the outgoing M6 on the track....and my take was that I handled like a boat (gorgeous car though)
BMW sorted that out with the M8. I did drive the competition model so I can't say much about the non-zcp.
Getting my license through the SCCA and going to do a racing school soon. Planning to convert the SCCA license to a NASA one so I can compete in the GTS category.
The M8 is sick, but looks too much like a highway cruiser than a car of feel comfortable whipping around turns in the mountains.
I highly suggest trying a true open wheel race car like a formula mazda, F1000, or wolf. Those will drive so much nicer than a tin top and are a great experience. Also, try a Honda 125cc shifter kart if u ever have the chance, really cheap and suprisingly fast and hard af. This is where all the f1 guys started, in karting. Many still use it to practice.
Driving a Formula 1 car on a famous racetrack (maybe SPA) is high up on the bucket list.........ideally one from Scuderia Ferrari.
Hopefully not the SF1000... thing is awful haha. But driving ANY car at this point on spa would be such a dream - especially that tasty uphill through eau rouge oh man
Yeah, I’m trying to dip my toe into the NASA GTS category, then planning to start training for open wheeled racing.
I've done a couple of track days. One was in vegas with a Porsche 911 GT3 and another time with an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 in Abu Dhabi. I've looked into joining the Manhattan Classic Car Club since they host some track days and mini roadtrips around the area. If anyone is part of the CCC i'd love to get your input on it since I have a membership referral through a friend and was going to join once I am back in the city.
Driving on the Yas Marina Circuit is a dream of mine. How was it?
It was crazy. There are 2 really long straights and I was really able to open the taps especially once i got comfortable with the car. It was my first time driving on a track so I really learned a lot about braking properly and hitting the apex of corners. My only experience with Yas Marina was in the F1 games and from watching Top Gear. I've driven faster cars now in the time since that experience but that GT4 Vantage was just so raw and i'd 100% go back and do it again. The 911 GT3 was a faster car by a long margin but the race track in vegas was obviously nothing compared to Yas Marina. Since i'm back home on the west coast I was thinking of taking my car to Laguna Seca for a track day and finally attempting the infamous corkscrew turn in real life.
