Traditional Media/Social Media just need to go at this point

Not WSO of course. But yeah, title says it all. Everything is fake, superficial, run by algorithms, media/social media just feed off of division, people can't stop staring at screens all day for validation/entertainment/sex, and social media knows exactly what it's doing and still does it. Pandemic made it worse. Corporate media is literally trying to get us to kill each other. The government is clueless, evil, and bloated, and honestly at this point most of it needs to dissolve, but people still seem to think that one side or the other will somehow make their lives better.

The happiest I have been all year is sitting outside on my grandfather's 100acres of land in the middle of freaking nowhere just sitting there and looking at the stars, alone, and not having cell service or a screen trying to grab my attention for a few hours. And I'm not even an introvert. I thought I would be old before I said stuff like this but I am 27 years old and genuinely worried about society and the direction of it. We are all consumption bots.

It seems like the latest trend nowadays is to blame Zuckerberg's algorithms for their own lack of impulse control and bad social life.  Netflix, the internet, video games, social media, etc. have made it quite a lot of fun just to relax in your house.  What could you do before that?  Watch some shitty soap opera?  Nothing's stopping you from doing any hobby that doesn't need a screen.

I'm really talking about society at-large. I have never had Twitter/Tik-tok, and I recently deleted instagram. But I'm sure I'm one of the very few. These platforms are addicting to people, especially young people. Would you tell a smoker, alcoholic, or drug abuser that they just have bad impulse control and to suck it up?

Agree with you on video games though, COD WZ got me through the pandemic along with my friends that I played it with.

The only part I sort of disagree is wrath ->facebook as twitter is probably worse. Other than that, it's spot on all the way. Especially instagram/tinder/amazon.

I spent a year in Canada with a religious group where internet and cell phones were restricted to only Sunday. My cell phone didn't work in Canada for cheap, so I basically only used a land line phone with a card on Sundays to call family. I didn't use the internet for about a year and it was pretty amazing. During one experience, I went to a Poustina (cabin in the snowy woods) where you fast and pray for 24 hours of solitude and only bread and tea. It was quite an experience! So I was just living it up for a year doing odd jobs like Lumberjack with a chain saw every day felling trees and bucking them and also splitting wood as needed. I would run through the forest in maple syrup season and collect all the maple sap for a season collection of 16,000 gallons of sap (400 gallons of syrup after evaporation). It really was one of the best years of my life living with this community who is very anti-technology. It was weird at first, but you develop very close relationships with people you hang out with and eat with when they aren't glued to their phone the whole conversation. The screen time the average person gets in a day is horrendous and also what are the kids going to do after spending their whole life in front of a screen? It is definitely good to take a break even if you can only get offline for 4 days on a vacation. But, when I worked corporate, I still had deadlines during my vacation and had to complete the projects and answer emails as needed in Mexico.

Ive not had IG for years but have a fake account to follow vibey pages and to pay girls for feet pics (j/k *looks around nervously*)

seriously though, its so fucking cringe when I look at local girls pages these days. and it is mostly only girls on it now. because posting pics of what youre doing all day every day is just beta as fuck and im positive most guys have clocked on to that. who are the girls of instagram trying to show off to? dopamine seeking and ego validating behaviour. weak sauce

I wish. Sadly women do it because they get 12982371983271% the amout of attention they would get without it. From whom? Men, obviously.

My colleagues use tinder. Their strategy? Swipe 90% right. This is ''men would fuck anything'' on stereoids and it's not going to correct itself.

These social media platforms have become completely toxic. When Instagram first came out, people would literally post the dumbest shit, but it was all organic content which was unreal. Nowadays, people are so selective and artificial with postings that it’s not even enjoyable anymore. Not to mention that half of the content on Instagram is targeted ads. I’ve also deleted Instagram multiple times, but always find myself caving to temptation and redownloading. Guess the algorithms have really worked a number on me. Don’t know where I was going with this, but social media is undoubtedly corrupting the youth of our country by causing unprecedented amounts of depression, anxiety, and body dysmorphia in teens, and by spreading misinformation.

Been thinking this for so long and del ig, fb, and snap. The perhaps best result of this is that I now can sit for hours straight enjoying literature, whereas before the brain would need some image/gif-dopa every 15 min.The worst thing you see is when parents quiet their children by sticking an iPad with a game/cartoon in front of them when they’re causing even the slightest inconvenience so that the parents themselves can go back to scrolling the feed of some designer-model-mom-influencer. This must truly ruin the kids' ability to concentrate, and obv result in utterly superficial parent-child relations.

you're doing the right stuff, just lead by example and find ways to interact with people you care about sans-social media

I'm also not all that worried super long term because at some point mother nature will win as these vitamin D and osteocalcin deficient dorks experience shit fertility and don't reproduce more people in the metaverse

la madre naturaleza is still undefeated

Brofessor, I usually like your posts but this one doesn't make sense.  Yes, not enough Vitamin D does cause some health problems but I strongly doubt it's enough to cause some kind of 'natural selection' where people who spend too much time online can't have kids and then people in the future don't use social media anymore.

admittedly, this is an evolving theory that's potentially impossible to prove with RCT data, but I've tried to at least follow a logical if this then that

lack of vitamin D due to being inside all of the time > lower osteocalcin which is closely linked with male fertility, bone density, etc

more time spent inside on social media/metaverse > less interaction with real humans > lower chances of finding a worthy mate > less chance of procreation

part of this is from the stoic school of thought where nature opposes everything in excess, and part of it is me being a bit of a polyanna, but I do believe there's something there. if humans continue to trash their bodies whether it's a result of bad diet, pollution, social media, whatever, natural selection eventually (key word, it could take hundreds or thousands of years) should weed out those people
