Transferring MBB offer to other office

I accepted an MBB offer for next fall (post-MBA level). Since then, my circumstances have changed and it would be much better for me to move to another city next year. It's not for selfish reasons at all, I'm quite happy to live in the city for which I got an offer. But something happened with a very close family member and living far away will make me quite anxious + I'm the only support they have. Them moving near me is not an option unfortunately (won't get into why). The office for which I accepted an offer is a lot bigger than the one I'd like to move to (similar as if I would be moving from the Boston to the LA office).

I know that transferring an offer is pretty much impossible. But has anyone ever done it successfully? Or have you tried and were told no? How should I go about it? Should I be asking my HR contact and tell them of my situation? Or should I ask my consultant contact instead of HR? Is there any risk that they could cancel my offer or something like that if I ask? I don't want to risk my offer.

If they say no to transferring my offer, I will still join next fall and will try to transfer after one year. But I would be much more focused if I could move there right away, and I think it'd be sad to build a bunch of connections in this office only to move to another office the next year. Plus, transferring after one year is not guaranteed either.

I would really love any and all insight and advice on this. I've been very anxious about this and am worried to reach out to them and risk my offer but also I feel I need to give it a try.

Since I'm anonymous, I guess I can disclose that it's Bain in case it changes anything

don't think they will cancel your offer. worst case is that the transfer does not work out. you have a solid reason so maybe contact your HR or recruiting lead ASAP. I know someone who is trying to transfer permanently to our office but is experiencing difficulty because of the low attrition rate during COVID. best of luck!

they are actually already working for our firm. but in that case, it is actually even harder because his home office has to agree to let them go first.

Ask your HR contact, either your school recruiter or the office recruiter. Whichever one you've interacted with the most is likely your best bet. They will NOT rescind your offer for asking. You seem to have a strong personal reason to prefer the change and I'm sure they will be sympathetic and try to work things out for you to the best of their ability given business needs. Even if you had a spurious reason, they would not rescind your offer.

-People have done this all the time, it's actually not too uncommon. Personal reasons (significant other/family) are the most common drivers, but surprisingly other spurious reasons seem to work on occasion as well...

-The worst that can happen is that they say no.

-They may say no right now and could be open to change depending on local business conditions. There's still a lot of time before next fall. If you're in a high demand city, then likely they will have someone who wants to fill that spot. The only open question is whether or not there is headcount for the smaller office you want to go to.

do you know anything about how receptive they may be to the transfer if it were a bank? I'm in similar situation as op...but for a bank. and want to move from popular office to another office
