Transition from Insurance AM to HF/Pure AM
Hey guys, just trying to gauge how receptive HFs/pure AMs are to people with IM experience, but for an insurance company. I'm currently working in structured credit research/trading for a firm with about $17bn AUM, and eventually would like to switch over. Love working in AM but upside at insurance company definitely is a lot smaller. I also feel like generally, insurance co's asset management arms are less sophisticated than many HFs/AMs. Have any of you made similar transitions or have peers who have? What is the general perception on the street of junior professionals from insurance AM?
Bump. Would also like insights as I'm in a similar position.
Pretty common to go from insurance to pure AM, but not as common to go from insurance to HF. Generally speaking you have to get some time in the AM world before moving over to a HF. Most AMs especially the larger ones have all sorts of client types and different strategies and a HF will value that exposure. If I were you I would work on my CFA, and be connecting with other people in the industry. Good sell-side contacts can also be helpful when you are ready to make the switch.
