Transition from Investment Banking Analyst to RE Analyst with a focus On Hospitality

Looking to make lateral into an RE analyst position with a four year background in Investment Banking Analysis (decent firms). Not sure where to start. Open to suggestions. Would be interested in doing something that relates to hospitality (on the RE analyst side).

Any suggestions on how to do this and what types of positions would match the criteria I'm outlining would be very much appreciated.

Were you covering RE in you IB days? If you were, it would probably be pretty easy to lateral into an Associate role at a REIT or PE group. If not, you'll probably have to start at the bottom. A majority of the hospitality specific REITs are based in Bethesda, MD with PE groups being peppered throughout the country (of course a large collection can be found in NYC, Chicago, DC and the West Coast).

A big part of the hotel real estate industry is networking. Whether through your alma mater, previous coworkers, friends, etc., any way you can find to crack that door open will give you a leg up.

I wasn't covering RE. So I'd need to go all the way back to entry level? Could acquire some specific modeling skill/certification to try to take 1 or 2 steps back rather than 4? Current experience is at reputable firm in a major market. I'm looking to stay in the same market.
