Travis Scott Drops Astroworld, Thoughts?
Travis Scott dropped Astroworld last night and it's already topping the iTunes charts. Thought it was really good though a few people I've talked to thought it was too instrumental. What are WSO's thoughts/favorite songs?
Honestly, I didn't enjoy it at all. Maybe I need to go through it again but it was bland to me.
While I dont listen to/dont like Travis Scott at all, its incredible how atmospheric Hip-Hop has become. Just from a couple listens you can hear the soundscapes akin to sigur ros/bon iver. Always astounded by good production, because it seems like rap today is not prejudice towards any kind of sound, and thats def a good thing.
Conversely, it irks me when rapheads hate on rock music/pop music/folk music, like they think rap is some higher art that other genres cant touch. Come on, these producers owe so much to white people to elevate their art form.
I hate mumble rap though. Wake me up when mumble rap ends.
I agree with both of your points but I don't think this album falls under mumble rap. I think he actually opened himself up on this one. A few really good features (aside from a couple mumble rappers) as well. I think overall a pretty solid album.
+SB
The most exciting innovation in Rap / HipHop / R&B these days is 100% on the production side and I'd love to keep sliding towards atmospheric / industrial side of things. Kanye's "Yeezus" that channeled Death Grips and Frank Ocean's "Blonde" that channeled Bon Iver were two albums that really carved out two paths I'd love to see the game go down.
Travis' talent is really as an executive producer where he's able to come up with the vision, and marry emerging production sound with the right rappers. In Days Before Rodeo, it was a beautiful orchestration of, for the most part, Metro Booming and Young Thug with a dark desert vibe that was ominous throughout the tape. Rodeo was a bit more refined, but with more budget and better access to talent that really made the first half of the album bang. '90210' is a production masterpiece.
Now the dude is a household name, executive producer of GOOD Music with a Rolodex of everyone in the game. If you look at the credits / features, 'ASTROWORLD' looks like the New York Yankees of rap albums and Drake's 'Scorpion' would be the LA Dodgers equivalent. When you've got this much talent on a single piece of work, it's pretty fucking hard to miss. But to me, I long for innovation, creativity and a sound that just floors me. But when you're at the top like Travis is, why would you do that when you can just run the massive brand out there and rake in guaranteed cash?
Gush over the production, surely, but I didn't hear anything that made me go, "holy shit!"
Notable tracks for me are: - "STOP TRYING TO BE GOD" - "5% TINT" - "NC-17" - "YOSEMITE"
It's an 7.5 - 8 /10, but how could it not have been?
clearly this guy follows anthony fantano =D
I think you should listen to Travis Scott's old stuff again. I think his best work is reflected in Days before Rodeo and its on soundcloud. To address your point about the prejudice, travis scott is one of those artists thats been shifting that attitude in my opinion. Some of his best songs are with major lazer, calvin harris, etc and theres more of that edm collab with rap too. Great sound overall
I like it. Not sure if it's better than rodeo/days before rodeo but it's better than huncho jack/birds probably. Can't say is my favorite.
New favorite: nc 17. Travis sounds like young thug
Stay away from this side of music. Literally a bunch of White high school girls posting images of their Spotify/iTunes page, playing this song, trying to "look cool."
Just wondering, how do you guys derive pleasure from rap/hip-hop? Bunch of mumbling, drug references, ugly melodies, and drunk/drugged up voices to top it off.
Some real music that actaually gets you in the sublime: Lizst Sonata in B Minor Mov. 1, Beethoven Sonata No. 21, Op. 53 (Waldstein), Chopin Op 25 Etude No. 1 (Aeolian Harp), Beethoven Sonata No. 23, Op. 57 (Appassionata). Listen to Brendel for the Waldstein, Richter for the Appassionata, Perahia for the Etude, and Rubinstein for the Sonata in B minor.
Don't understand the MS. Does everyone on this forum enjoy deteriorating their intellectual capacity with shitty music? Amazing that so many of you are attracted to horrendous music, but also pathetic at the same time
Keep on exposing yourself as a casual you clown.
Not like a hip hop artist just won a Pulitzer or anything.
Latter part of Sicko when Drake came in was good
great album
