Trying for Experienced Hire - Oil & Gas background

As the title suggests, i am from technical oil and gas and have around 7.5 yrs exp. My intention is to enter consulting without an MBA. My experience has lot of diversity (Asia, Europe, Eurasia, Middle East) and lot of leadership skills (lead various teams consisting of people from various backgrounds, cultures, etc). From the last one year i have been working for myself and take projects as freelance from oil & gas companies (one major client is giant global operator) and some smaller firms from various regions.
I am focussing on office/location which is probably the least sought location, so that i get a good chance. I wanted to apply for a top 5 MBA program, but want to try my luck at this first.
Does my profile sound good and is it wise to give it a try now?
