Trying to get out of OPS

Here's the situation:

I am currently working in a BO OPS role at a medium sized hedge fund. I have an opportunity to take a job at a commercial real estate brokerage. I also plan on applying to an MBA program once I have enough work experience (only 2 years so far). I definitely want to get out of OPS and would love to move into consulting after I finish grad school.

Would leaving an OPS role to be a commercial real estate broker be a bad move if I hope to go for an MBA and pivot to consulting?

These are very different fields, but I feel like having sales experience could be more beneficial than just an operations background. Does anyone have any insight or suggestions?

I hope you didn’t take the broker opportunity, because in my experience, I see people from finance to real estate, but rarely the other way around. Take the MBA route or try going directly from BO to FO in other firms dealing with the same product/strategy.

Also, though it is FO, brokerage/sales is regarded as “solely” as client facing work, and different from the investment/product side. The credentials for analytical experience or skill should be less than your BO role.

If you take the brokerage route, transition to asset manager/investment professional/portfolio manager role is possible, but only within the real estate industry, which doesn’t seem like your goal...

From my experience a top MBA will open the doors if you put the networking effort in.

Make sure the type of firms you want to work for recruit from that MBA program. I would also look at getting your CFA level 1 to help sweeten the deal.

It's all about derisking yourself for someone to give you the shot you need in FO.
