BB Summer Analyst hours and work
For summer analysts at BBs who have already started or if anyone has any idea in general what should be expected so SA’s in terms of work and hours this summer? Any insights?

Not at a BB, but for my virtual internship, the hours have been as follows:
8:00 - Wake up check phone for emails (usually nothing, if there's something panic and run to my desk)
8:45/9 - Start working if I have anything to work on, if not usually chill till about 10ish, then email people on my team one by one to see if I can help.
10-6 - Work/ calls with team/ watch Netflix depending on if I'm assigned something or not
6-9 - there have been a couple of days when I have used this time to work when the FT analysts are jammed, and there is a client deliverable that needs to get done (you know who is doing the first draft of those appendix slides)
9-12? - This has been by far been the most variable time. Sometimes my day is over around 6/7 (like today), but other times I've been given work at 11:30 and needed to grind till ~3 am so my associate could review it first thing in the morning. I'm usually attentive/responsive till 12/1230, but at that point, if no one has given me work/ told me to expect work, I don't think they can be that mad if I miss an email at 1:00 am (hasn't happened...yet).
Overall, I'd say I am on "on the clock" from 8 am to 12 pm, but there are usually large chunks of time during the day when I don't do anything (and I'm not even at my desk). I have noticed that the longer I am free during the day, the harder I will get fucked that night. I'd also say the best thing you can do is set up your email on your phone with push notifications and turn off the "sent from IOS" default ending, and you can do whatever you want for at least a few hours every day while still being super responsive.
This is awesome thank you for the detail Wow. What would you say most of your work is? Modeling or more PowerPoint type stuff? Are you on a bunch of calls? And are you asking your analysts ir associates for work all the time so they know you’re working hard to get the FTO? Sorry for all the follow ups
Basically all PowerPoint. The Excel work I have done so far has not been technical at all (I hope I will get to do more modeling as the internship progresses). It is mostly creating/ adding to buyers lists, or sourcing and adding contact information. I have done some comps work (trading and transaction), but for the most part, it is just plugging in the CIQ code in the reference cell and letting the workbook update and then reformating sheets or charts based on the desired look.
My bad, I spaced and just didn't answer your other questions. I am on a decent number of calls (none with clients). If they are team calls with senior members, I basically don't say anything apart from "Yes," "Ok," "Got it," "Will do," etc. If they are calls with the junior team, we usually shoot the shit for a little while then I revert to the above phases plus the occasional question. I also have a fair number of 1:1 calls where someone will call me with comments or with a new task and explain what I need to do (these tend to be more conversational, and I spend more time asking questions).
In terms of asking for work, I do, but I'm not constantly hitting them up because I imagine that would be annoying. Its more like if I just took a 30-minute break, I'll email an an/as and ask if I can help, then wait for them to say no (I've never gotten a yes lol). After the no, I'll email someone else, wait for the no. Rinse repeat. Then after a few nos, I usually give up and resume doing nothing until someone emails me something. I think you need to strike a balance between showing a willingness to help and not being irritating (i.e. I wouldn't email the same person 3 times a day asking to help, I'd do it every other day so they don’t forget you exist) .
If you’re only on your computer for half the time from 8 am to midnight, are you getting paid for 8 hours or 16, so a bunch of overtime?
My internship doesn't pay hourly so I'm not sure how that would work. I think there might technically be a provision in my contract for overtime, but I am not expecting to get any because I think the base is meant to compensate me for all my working time.
Thanks for all this, great to get answers. Also curious if you’ve been working weekends?
This is the first weekend I've needed to do work (I wouldn't even say I really needed to, but my associate asked for a draft Monday or Tuesday, and I figured it would be better to get it to him early on Monday to show initiative). I also think I might need to update some of the slides I built last week tomorrow (the analyst said I might get comments over the weekend), but so far, weekends have been light (~4 hours today and planning to do the same tomorrow).
I'm guessing this is primarily during the week, but how has it been during weekends for you?
See above comment.
This was all a very helpful read thank you really appreciate it. Im an incoming IB summer analyst as well. Did you know all PPT shortcuts before starting? or did you learn them on the job/during training?
I thought I responded to this earlier, but I learned it all on the job so far. If you really wanna prepare, setup your QAT and learn how to use "ninja lines" (not sure that is a technical term, but it is what my analyst called them).
Could you elaborate on what ninja lines are ? Never heard of them
3 weeks of training 5 weeks of intern project
are you sure it's 5 weeks of intern project?
the 5 weeks is inclusive off working on deals or whatever stuff you're tasked with by the staffer?
We'll give every intern stupid stuff to do in the first week. Once we can trust you, we will give you better things like even modeling or entire decks to put together. All depends on how much you can show us that you are good.
Also, for any of you hardos out there, NO ONE will be emailing you past 11 or 12 for sure about any work that they need done by the early morning. The firm is trying to make themselves look good, not make you want to leave and spread false rumors about them or talk shit about them behind their backs.
where do you work?
Don't ask revealing questions. WE are trying to e anonnymous here
He's a troll. just ignore this dumb ass
cough PJT cough
OOOOOOO because I sound like the VP who faced no repercussions for that incident?
Can anyone speak on the S&T end of things?
Just replied below
This is actually an informative post from an associate’s perspective because we are still trying to figure out how to make this summer worthwhile for SA’s. Virtual internships are new to all of us.
This is a great post and has been really helpful to read. Any other perspectives from other firms? Thanks to the people who helped so far
Thank you for the appreciation! I'll write more for sure now.
the comment above was really helpful -- can anyone else talk about what they've been doing? seems like a lot of info on Bofa since they started first but not other banks. for me it's been a shitton of panels and barely any work. real work like pitches and client stuff aren't even allowed
Where is this?
