Sorry for the rant, but HR keeps amazing me with how incompetent they are.
So I will start this summer FT and have to deal with HR a lot. They never fail to amaze me with disorganized they are. It started with the FT contract, which we received more than a month later than they told us we would get it. The signing bonus was due the first payroll after signing, but some still haven't received it (not to sound entitled, but if the contract states you should get it at the first payroll after signing, than you should get it on that payroll. We are now 10 payrolls further). I have sent a copy of my passport more than 5 times now and I have signed my contract 3 times. Also signed a lot of other document multiple times. When I asked why I had to sign the same document again they just replied "It is for our administration". I ALREADY GAVE YOU THIS INFORMATION! My date of birth didn't change the last month, nor did my gender (though I understand this is possible nowadays).
Also, for lettings, credit cards and other things some companies want a confirmation from HR that I will indeed start working there this summer. But HR refuses to confirm, so I couldn't apply to some properties. Some agents did accept my contract, but others didn't as it might have been a fake contract...
Also funny, for my background check I had to provide evidence that I was a SA last summer at the same place. "I know I hired you last year because you did well during your internship, but can you please provide evidence that you actually did that internship and performed well? The document that I signed at the end of your internship should suffice."
Other people have similar stories? Note, this is a BB, so they take on hundreds of people every year. You would think that they should have some experience in doing the same trick every year for hundreds of people. Value destroying department...
Yes HR is not always the best. You should also understand that the larger the organization, the more bureaucracy exists, and because of this usually it follows that larger organizations are more disorganized. You should also not get worked up about things such as this, because part of your job description will involve "putting out fires", repeating incredibly annoying tasks an incredible amount of times, and just generally being the guy that solves problems.

Somewhat HR related, but I closed a corporate account at a previous employer and Amex is still calling me about an unpaid balance that I sent for processing, with my old employer lying to my face that they paid it off.
Lol'ed at the gender fluidity comment. Your HR frustration is my IT infrastructure frustration...although it seems like most BBs are making strides to invest in advancing IT but not HR. I've gotten generally very lucky with HR in my (albeit limited) experience with recruiting and onboarding, not too many redundancies and typically very competent people.
