Typical Hours
Am thinking of a move to NYC, and wondering what typical hours are for a hedge fund analyst back east? Obviously the market opens later, but I'm wondering how early analysts get in and how late they stay. I'm not talking about the young people a few years out of school who burn the midnight oil, or places that have an abnormal obsession with face time. Just the usual hours for a more senior analyst / PM at a hedge fund.
If it's helpful, I've worked in trading in San Francisco (typical hours 4:15 am to 2-2:30 pm) and also as an analyst here in Los Angeles (typical hours 6-5).
Thanks!
M
I get in around 8:00-8:30am and read reports/emails etc until our all-hands meeting around 9:00am. Usually in anywhere from 6:00-8:00pm depending on what's going on/how many ideas I'm working with the senior analysts and PM on. If things are crazy I'll be later but that's rare, and I've never stayed past 12:00. Do some work (mostly report reading/model building) from home on the weekends.
Usually I work 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week, but I work for myself so if I want to take a break I can. :)
Happy, Philly can't handle you and Ant at the same time!
Intern'd at a medium sized fund in NYC and traders worked 7am - market close. analysts worked 7am - 7/8pm. pm worked 830am - 5pm.
mind you im sure the pm's were going to dinners, keeping alert of whats going on overnight, etc.
What asset class and position?
If you are an execution trader you are probably in at 8 and out by 5. If you are a long/short analyst, it all depends on your research style.
Here's a day in the life piece that I penned a couple months ago: http://www.wallstinsiders.com/insights/article/a_day_in_the_life_hedge_…
thanks guys - very helpful!
