Typical questions
About to start interviewing at a couple investment management places as a senior graduating this May and was wondering what type of financial metrics were fair game? Do they expect you to be able to go pretty deep into balance sheets and CF statements or is it pretty much the basic P/E ratio, PEG, ROIC, ROE, ect? I've never been in this types of interviews so I don't know the variation and difficulty.
It depends on the firm and the group. Fixed income, equities, PE, HF, real estate, commodities, or multi-asset?
Let's say equities and commodities - I think I know what to expect for fixed income (duration, convexity, DCF, ect).
For equities, the technical questions usually aren't too complicated. You will typically have valuation questions thrown your way, so be sure to understand valuation metrics (such as P/E ratio) and what goes into them (i.e., P/E = (1-b)/(k-g) - lower required returns or higher growth rates justify higher P/E multiples).
