UBS Banking vs. Valstone Private Equity

So I'm in quite the dilemma for choosing a summer internship between IBD UBS and PE Valstone. I heard that private equity firms rarely hire interns and especially not junior Ugrad interns. So anyways, I received an offer from Valstone Partners which is a private equity firm with a bunch of Ross MBAs and alums. They seem like a very small lean firm. I am now worrying if perhaps the internship is just because they wanted a coffee-getter or someone to go and do all the busywork.

My other choice for an internship is UBS Ibanking which I would usually take over Valstone but since UBS Ibanking is currently not doing so well and I recently read this article on Valstone: http://www.crainsdetroit.com/apps/pbcs.dll/articl…...

I just don't know what to do. Will I learn more at Valstone or will they make me do secretary type work? Will I be unqualified for Private equity analyst work since I'm just a Ugrad? Is UBS Ibanking better? Any help is greatly appreciated as are comments and feedback. I heard that UBS interns don't do anything atm so I want the experience that will help me learn the most about the industry. In the future I do plan to go into private equity. I also dislike Ibanking a bit due to my sophomore experiences but I'm willing to give it another shot if Valstone is just smoke and mirrors.

Valstone seems very small (250m?), and while I obviously don't know exactly what you'd be doing there, the fact is you'll probably learn more at UBS and it will look better on you resume. That much is obvious though. The tricky question is about the chance a UBS SA will convert to FT, and frankly I can't give you any answers there.

"exit opp should be better and wider than coming out of that small PE firm." "The tricky question is about the chance a UBS SA will convert to FT, and frankly I can't give you any answers there." " If you have doubts about a position with a fairly small PE fund then take UBS. Its a solid brand and you'll get solid experience."

Good points. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm going to go up this week to Valstone and see what they can tell me concerning my actual job details and information. The reason I didn't jump on UBS is because of the current situation but mostly because I dislike banking from what I did sophomore year. I felt like the money/fame is gone and I should do what I like. However, I can definitely bite the bullet for a better future outlook. Thanks again guys.

sounds like a tool from one of the state schools

I actually worked for Valstone (used to be called Touchstone) and it was a good place to work. You will actually do real work, not just secretary work and I got some good experience. But, I used it to move into IBD which almost everyone that I talked to has done. So, if you already have IBD at UBS TAKE IT 100%....they hire barely any of their interns and any BB will look better on a resume.

great firm, but still take the UBS...no brainer
