UBS FIG in NYC
I'm turning in my group preference soon and looking for some insights in regard to UBS FIG in NYC. Appreciate any comments on bankers, dealflow, exit opps. I'm interested in PE/HF down the road so PE/HF placement is greatly appreciated!

lots of analysts from UBS got fired in past years UBS is kind of a sinking ship, so my recommendation is to try and get into a group that will allow you to lateral in to another group at a BB
i'm not sure how good FIG is at UBS, but as long as it's a top group within UBS, such as m&a, you should be fine incidentally, i have it on very good authority that UBS's FIG in asia is doing very well, so perhaps its also something to consider
UBS unlikely to fire analysts in the future and comp is up. much leaner org now.
unlikely to recapture glory days of the past but the ship is being managed better now.

Also, OP, know some FIG guys there and it seems like a very strong group in terms of deal flow this past year. One of the MDs I know is also a really cool guy
FIG is fine, what other groups are available to you at this point?
@"on9j123": 4 out of my top 5 will probably be FLSF, FIG, Industrials, Consumer Retail. Debating between Healthcare and Power&Utilities for the 5th choice.
FLSF is a great choice, but I know no one from the group so I think I got no pulling there. I talked mostly with FIG bankers during recruiting and they were nice. Got a feeling that they wanted me in their group. I think it's a good group to be in, but as several people here pointed out, FIG might pigeonhole you and limit exit opps.

UBS FIG is quite strong. They've made a number of new hires, including two guys from GS and Barclays in the past couple months. The co-heads of the group are also very strong. Probably the coverage group that UBS has poured the most investment into over the past year. Great culture; intellectual, but still a bit fratty. Can't comment on exit ops, but exits have generally been good for UBS analysts over the past 2 yrs.

FinTech or straight FIG? If you get to work on both, you'll attain strong EBITDA and Credit analytics. Straight FIG may limit prospects in PE, as no LBOs are run. Food for thought.
A friend of mine (very smart guy, would not bet against him in an analytical corp fin engagement) interned there and is going back. He was pretty happy with it, hours aside. Think that exit options were part of his calculus. This kind of stuff can't hurt either:
Pay her head for 2013: CHF343k ($383k), up 3% on 2012.
Bonus pool for 2013: CHF3.2bn ($3.5bn) across the bank, up from CHF2.5bn in 2012.
Structure of bonuses for 2013: Senior staff expected to receive bonuses in contingent capital that will be wiped out if capital levels fall below 7% (as at Credit Suisse). Last year, UBS introduced bonuses for senior staff which vest over a five year period. However, a presentation accompanying UBS’s fourth quarter results suggests 88% of UBS’s 2013 bonuses will have vested by the end of 2016.
CRD IV changes: UBS preemptively hiked some salaries for senior bankers in May 2013. At that time, salaries rose by a maximum of 15%.
Happiness index: Smug, particularly in relation to Credit Suisse.
Interestingly, the former head of the group went on to form Carlyle's FIG PE Fund. When scouring through FIG PE shops, I see strong UBS FIG placement. So exit opps certainly seem strong. Can anyone confirm this?

It is a little off topic, but is UBS still recruiting for SA positions?
Is a strong group. Sarkozy's departure is obviously a big hit, but they have a deep bench in FIG with Halle and Company taking over.
FIG always has unique placement because your skill set is so specific.

I was recently placed into the FIG group at UBS (Analyst Level), not by choice. I have aspirations to get into the buy side (PE, HF, etc) after the two years and from what I heard form people, FIG is not the best group for that.
Can anyone confirm that? And is it really that bad for exit ops? Also how is that group at UBS?
Since I don't have much choice at this point what kind of things should I keep in mind once I start so that I would be better positioned for exit ops (HF, PE, etc)? Also would you guys have any recommendation as far as reaching out to HR and maybe asking them for other group options or should I just keep my mouth shut and make the best out of this experience.

If you made any strong connections with senior bankers in your preferred groups during interviews and such, now would be the time to reach out to them. Contrary to what HR would have you believe, if a group wants you bad enough, then they can/will make it happen if you show them how bad you want it.

UBS FIG has a very good culture (compared to other groups at UBS) and does their own execution.
On the other hand you are right, FIG does pigeonhole you a bit.
