UG Exchange in France/Germany - Convincing the Parents
Hi all,
4th year Canadian non-target UG here. Did co-ops in commercial & corporate banking at Canadian Big5s. High 80 avg (mid-high 90s in finance), ran investment fund, etc. After IB's told me to drop my last co-op so I could be in sync with IB hiring timelines (now graduating in April rather than August 2020), a 4-month window opened for me to do something I've wanted for a little more than a year: an international exchange.
Met with my exchange adviser who said that I'm a great candidate (finished a lot of my required courses early). Any mentor I've consulted with said it's a great idea. I've narrowed the search down to 2 great schools in Germany & France, however this post is less about deciding which school I go to and more about figuring out how to convince my staunchly opposed old-school parents to let me do this. Kind of a niche topic that maybe not everyone has dealt with so not sure how much feedback I'm expecting, but anything helps.
My parents were born and raised in a small Canadian city, never living outside of it - in fact they even had qualms about me moving 5hrs away for my CB internship. I've usually leveraged my high grades & generally good behavior to do whatever I wanted, however this is way out of their comfort zone.
Why I want to do an exchange
1. I've lived away from home for 4mo and absolutely loved it.
2. I want to travel a bit and see the world before I start working FT in (hopefully) IB or CB.
3. The schools I am considering are way more prestigious than my current UG and could help my resume.
4. The schools I am considering have more interesting & specialized courses, especially in finance, than my current school.
5. I'm addicted to the challenge of getting thrown out of my comfort zone and making myself adapt to new places.
6. I want to meet new people, hear new stories, experience more - etc etc
6.5. If I choose the French school, I can perfect my french (was near-fluent in gradeschool/highschool).
My parents arguments
1. "You cant afford it" (this is 90% of their reasoning: I can, but I would have to liquidate a portion of my LT savings - not worried about this in the mid-term)
2. "You always have crazy ideas and change your mind" (this is totally right, but I'm a 21 yr old student and I always finish what I start)
3. "You might have a job lined up, just finish your degree here" (this one makes no sense at all to me)
Thanks for your insights in advance - could really use some advice if anyone has experience with this.
Hi Rooster Illusion, no, I never sleep and so I can respond to any lonely threads (like this one) at all hours of the night. Impressive, I know ;-)
Hope that helps.
