Undergrad GPA Affects Post-MBA Investment Banking Recruiting?

Hi monkeys,

I'm going to enroll in a M7 MBA program (CBS/Kellogg/Sloan/Booth) next August. My post-MBA goal is to join a BB bank as an investment banking associate and I think the best solution is through a summer associate internship.

The problem, though, is that I had a very bad-looking undergrad GPA (roughly 2.7/4.0) although my ranking is fair (roughly 60% in my class). But frankly, the GPA number is EIGHT years ago.

My question is, will my undergrad GPA from eight years ago affect my post-MBA Investment Banking recruitment? If so, how can I remedy that? I don't think I can have any MBA GPA during my summer associate recruitment (in December).

Thanks a lot!

i could be wrong (only really have researched/talked to ppl for MBA consulting recruiting), but as far as ive heard, IB associate interviews are given out pretty freely to those in MBA business schools">M7 programs (like the one you're going into).

I'd say you should be fine

Same as above. I didn't list it and only a couple banks asked, in the end it didn't matter. If they ask you what your undergrad GPA was, be prepared to answer the follow up question, "Why is it so low?". I always said something along the lines of how I was immature, didn't take it seriously, have grown and learned from it, then spoke about my recent grades and test scores as to how they are a better representation of me today. Making excuses likely won't go over well.

Considering where you got in, I'm going to assume that you tore the GMAT a new ass. That should make up for a lackluster GPA (I'm also going to guess that it was in something difficult like engineering or something without grade inflation e.g. finance)

Recently went through summer associate recruiting at a top-20 mba program and undergrad gpa/gmat/grad gpa never came up in any of my discussions with bankers. i wouldnt sweat it - especially considering you will be at an MBA business schools">m7.

if for some reason someone does ask, i'd have a short line or two prepared to discuss why that was the case, and what you were able to do to help offset it later on (i.e. get a high enough gmat score to get into an m7)

I have seen resume books from top MBA schools such as U of Chicago, NYU etc, and quite often, encountered resumes with undergraduate GPA not listed. Some of those did list some kind of awards or scholarship they received though.

I assume it's okay to not put down your undergraduate GPA if you think it wouldn't look good on your resume.

As for the interviewers asking your GPA during interviews, I have no idea. Others who are experienced would comment, I believe.

But I don't think it matters too much. Like any weakness you have on your resume, be prepared to explain why you didn't get great grades in undergrad and why whatever lead you to get poor grades no longer is relevant.
