UK - MM/LMM PE comp & WLB

Hi all.

Most of the posts I see on this topic are US focused so its hard to gauge proper benchmarks.

Is anyone able to share insights on total comp and WLB at the associate/investment manager level at UK MM/LMM funds

I know there are a couple of articles published online but they tend not to be accurate from my experience!

Hey thanks for doing this. Work at an EB as well and would be very much interested in knowing the following.

  • How were your hours at the EB and how's it now?
  • Do you have better vicinity over your time?
  • What's the comp range at LMM PEs?
  • How does the recruitment work? Are they more focussed on the language part?
  • I know this is more firm specific but I've heard LMM PE have a bit more chill attitude than UMM and MFS. Is it true?

Thanks again :)

Sure, happy to answer your questions. Apologies, I'm answering on the mobile app and can't seem to view your questions (bullets) as I type, probably a bug.

In my EB I was working 55-80 hours on average. Definitely not insufferable and probably would have stayed if this opportunity didn't rise.

I get some control over my hours but am actively trying to prove myself as a new joiner. Promotion is somewhat competitive but I think I'm a strong candidate. I work probably 50-60 hours on average but on far fewer deals and more intensive tasks. A few weeks I worked 70+. Also getting used to the DD process and other new parts of the role.

My comp is roughly 130k all-in, which seems fair. I think if I stayed in IB I'd be making more right now.

I'll answer your remaining questions in my next post.

Recruitment was relatively easy and done through a notable recruiter in London. Focus was much more on behavioural / culture type questions than technical.

I didn't do any networking prior to joining, but there was a guy from my old EB who knew my team and the work we did. I am pretty confident technically so the LBO test was relatively straightforward, much easier than a MF test I did for another process.

The culture at my firm is definitely more chill than at most MFs, however comp is sacrificed. I know some people at MFs who make double me for the same band. I don't think they've ever worked a

Whilst the hours are less intense and I can pursue my hobbies and family life during the morning and nights, I wouldn't describe it as a breeze. I still work alot more than all my engineering and technology friends from uni, but make significantly more and do interesting work.

What are the transitions after LMM PE, if you so desire? E.g. VC? I looked at some LMM funds and some people seemed to exit to small/average VC funds.

Would you be able to move to MM PE, if you didn't have the EB experience?
