Career Resources
Generally, the ranking amongst law, investment banking and consulting recruiters tends to be as follows:
To be fair, recruiters from the top firms only target around 5 universities in the UK, they tend to be Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial and Warwick/UCL...
For international reputation, only LSE holds any weight, perhaps UCL as well, but not often.
I went to Warwick and enjoyed it. A lot of banks give presentations/workshops, attend careers fairs etc.
I'd probably say has the most LSE weight with banks too and you'd be based in London for interviews.
What is your opinion of UCL vs Warwick, do you think that UCL has the edge?
how much weight does lse have with US based investment banks?
tonnes...when US investment banks recruit from UK universities, they typically only target Oxford, Cambridge and LSE.
If you by the number of banks presenting, Oxbridge and the London institutions would certainly seem to be the most popular. Much-visited provincial redbricks include Manchester, Warwick and Nottingham, amongst others.
Story About Nottigham
I would like to share a story about Nottingham Business School http://businessbecause.com/nubs.htm
I thought it would be helpful to read an in-depth and fresher review about Nottingham
I went to Manchester but it's not the best school for IBD recruiting. Your order should be -
LSE UCL Warwick Durham Manchester
Although I had the best three years of my life at uni and still managed to land an IBD gig (albeit with some struggle).
I had never heard of any of those universities except LSE, Oxford and Cambridge before I spent my summer stint in London.
what's LSE vs Oxbridge reputation in the US (only US people reply please, not those who haven't worked/interned in UK). Do you consider Oxbridge to be superior etc to LSE or are they generally held in same respect?
I think LSE is considered on par with NYU-Stern or slightly better...but most likely less reputable than UPenn-Wharton. On the other hand, Oxford and Cambridge are clearly on par with most of the Ivy League universities.
In my opinion, LSE, Oxford, and Cambridge are well known and have good reputation in the U.S.
Besides the three, hardly anyone in the U.S. would know the difference between Warwick/UCL/Imperial and Nottingham/Durham/Manchester etc.
I am also pretty certain that many of us here hadn't heard of places such as Bath/Durham/Nottingham/UCL/Imperial/Warwick before this post.
Which Ivy leagues would you say rank below oxbridge and lse?
cool, thanks for that!
And at LSE, what's the best LSE to join for IB ? Msc in Accounting & Finance, Msc in Finance, Msc in Finance & Economics, or Msc in Finance & PE ?
i was at LSE and think that the difference amongst courses is very minimal, banks don't discriminate on courses and Careers Service/events etc are common to all students. Best to do MSc Acc and Fin as its a "easy" course, Fin and Eco is notoriously difficult (do a search on facebook for the course and you'll find multiple hate groups!). Ofcourse, if you wish to keep the PhD option open, then Fin and Eco may be the way to go!
Not sure if you define "international reputation" by "known in the US", but Nottingham University's Business School is highly regarded among MNCs in the UK . They also have campuses in China, Malaysia etc so depends on how international you intend to go.
Also the campus is beautiful went there last week. Apparently its designed by the same architects as London's Gherkin - the iconic pineapple looking building for those of you who don't know..
I have been accepted from the Henley Business School (Reading) in MSc Investment Management and Manchester Business School in MSc in Finance. Which of the two universities/programmes would you recommend ? Thank you very much for your answer!
they re terrible
