Undergraduate Advice

Hey all, first post on WSO and was just looking for general advice regarding academics and career direction. I'm an incoming freshman at HYP and was interested in economics during high school which lead me to consider IB/consulting as a starting point in my career. However, I've read that you don't really need to major in economics to break into these fields so I'm wondering if it's fine to major in something like statistics in case I want to pursue something like technology in the future. I'm currently doing a summer internship (nothing special) so I guess my major points are

  1. Statistics > Economics in terms of flexibility?
  2. Should I be looking into PWM/PE internships for next summer or does the specific field not matter until summer after sophomore year (i.e. can I work with a nonprofit or intern somewhere not finance related)
  3. What should I focus on to make my undergraduate experience the best that it can be? In general, is there anything to know beyond have a 3.7+ GPA, 2-3 extracurriculars (opinions on sports & frats?), and get my graduation requirements out of the way early (also should I place out of intro econ)? Obviously all while exploring academic interests through different courses.

Thanks, appreciate all advice however broad and the more specific the better.
