University College Dublin, Quinn - Input
I have the opportunity to do study abroad at University College, Dublin and take courses at the Quinn School of Business. I am looking for some feedback on this school, whatever you can contribute would be very much appreciated.
Also, I hear that US citizens, which I am, can live and work in Ireland for 12 months without work permits and is also easier to get long term work visas. Any Americans out there working in Ireland?
Not sure on work permit issue but to be perfectly honest I wouldnt be crazy about Quinn. If you plan to work in Ireland after it could be worthwhile (UK a stretch) but outside of that it wont be valued too highly.
Trinity is ranked higher in all rankings but even at that not sure how valuable. The one thing I will say is these MBA's are quite cheap so good value but Id try to get a top 15 in Europe ahead of them.
For example last year Quinn we're offering places to prize winners on a radio show. Im not kidding...obviously their were some minimum requirements to receive prize but it doesnt bode well and is not behavior I would expect of a top bus school.
If your set on Ireland go Trinity but personally Id be looking at the likes of INSEAD, Oxford, LBS, Bocconi etc. ahead of them.
there is no work outside of Big 4 (primarily Audit) in Ireland right now. Almost all the graduate programs in banks have been suspended since 2008 and there is no immediate sight of them restarting. First preference is given to EU citizens so the chances you will get anything substantial is much lower than a major city despite the lesser competition in Dublin.
UCD and Trinity are both considered top schools in Ireland. I know UCD's MBA program is stronger than Trinity, but not sure about Quinn (UCD undergraduate business) vs. Trinity Undergraduate Business.
To some up my thoughts, if you're looking for a fun summer then sure, go ahead and study in Dublin - its a great time! If you're looking to supplement your resume to make you more attractive to IB's in the future, stick to the top 15/London.
Wow really? I saw that they were ranked 30 on FT European B-Schools ranking so I figured they could not be that bad, also Trinity was nowhere to be found. I did a Linkedin search and nearly four-thousand people from UC Dublin were in financial services in london/UK compared to about 1700 from Trinity. Curious to know what is your background with these schools. Thanks for the info.
University College Dublin (UCD) is a very good university, establishing itself as the second best college in Ireland and currently does a have higher rank for its finance program as well as highly ranked MBA program. However, Trinity College Dublin is a very prestigious university not just within Europe but also within the U.S., particularly in the finance, consulting circles, etc. The quality of the students and lecturers are higher. In terms of the rankings Trinity has fallen due to a lack of government funding however they have really begun to reap the benefits from their strong international alumni network in terms of donations which other universities like UCD does not have the same reach, as well as other ways to make up for lack of funding such as commercial sources. Beyond the funding issue over the last few years Trinity has begun the building of a state of the art business school with new business classes in finance, entrepreneurship, accounting that is attracting a lot interest from accredited professors and lecturers globally. So expect Trinity to surpass UCD very soon in most business school rankings as the money pumped into it will attract top professors and researchers. The school is expected to be finished by 2019 so moving forward Trinity will definitely be the place to be moving forward. From experience, Trinity College Dublin is a big attraction for investment banking, consulting, and Asset Management. It is a target school for most if not all investment banks in London and sees a way higher conversion rate into those industries compared to UCD. If you are making a decision on undergrad or postgrad, Trinity is the clear cut choice.
I think that in terms of the City, Trinity would be seen as a far more prestigious university than UCD, but UCD is still a good school. There'll be people far better placed than me to comment on how they're percieved though.
As far as living and working in Ireland goes, technoviking was on the money. A huge number of my friends from home are moving to the Canada/Australia after graduating. Of those that stay behind, finance related jobs seem to be mostly Big 4 audit; some others are working for international banks (BoAML, Citi, etc) in technology roles in Dublin. Aside from that, I know a couple people who interviewed for corporate finance at Davy's, but that's about it. It's not a pretty jobs market out there at all.
Aside from all that negativity, I'm sure you'd have a great time in Dublin - it's a fun city. If you go to Ireland, make sure to get around the country as much as you can; Galway is an incredible place for having a good time!
