University of Houston Chances
Next fall i will be attending UH and I was wondering what my chance are going to be breaking into IB (BB and MM) and what I could do to improve my chances. I do not plan transfer because I basically get to attend college for free.
Hi loldude0516, no, I never sleep and so I can respond to any lonely threads (like this one) at all hours of the night. Impressive, I know ;-)
If we're lucky, maybe I can guilt some users to help you out: Cries Vagabond85 sl123456
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
It's impossible to tell you what the odds of breaking in are. They are different for everyone and rely heavily on personal drive, academic achievement, and social skills.
If you network hard, get good grades, and participate in social events on campus (i.e. greek life) you'll have a good shot. Remember to not be so worked up about it and enjoy your time at school as well.
Since you're attending the University of Houston I'd recommend that you get involved with IBSC (Investment Banking Scholars) as well as a social Greek organization.
Feel free to reach out with any questions.

lol poverty mentality. Don't listen to this failure.

I have them in the Sweet 16. Tough potential match up with Michigan in the 2nd round though.

nothing is impossible, so neither is landing into IB from UH. It will be an uphill battle and take more advice than 1 thread on here. do your homework and best of luck.

Most banks in Houston generally have reserved spots for people from McCombs and Rice and fill those spots through internships. Generally if one of the interns does not work out or accepts an offer from another bank than the bank will go look at non-target schools.
Like posters above stated that it is not impossible but it will be an up-hill battle. I would recommend start building your network sooner rather than later and make sure you have the grades.
My brother will be starting his MBA there and I have given him the same advise. Hope this helps
RBC did on campus recruiting (OCR) at UH this past year for analyst roles - and I know that RBC is a solid bank that keeps getting better in the energy space. I don't know if other banks do OCR at UH, but you may be able to network your way into the other banks if you can make good grades + get good internship experience.

I have never attended UH, but the best thing I think you can do to increase your chances is get investment banking experience ASAP. Find all the boutiques in/around Houston, and try to get an unpaid internship at first. If you have investment banking experience on your resume + a good gpa, you have a way better chance of being able to network into a spot.
An extra year to get the Masters in Accounting can help because you will have more time to get the above mentioned investment banking experience. The problem is that OCR for both UH Finance and UH Masters in Accounting will be pretty similar, so you will still have to put in work to get your resume seen by the Houston bankers. Once you get to the interview stage, you will need to craft your story well to get an offer, but first focus on getting investment banking experience.
ayyy my ol alma matter, go coogs! i dont work in investment banking, but i do know theyve really tried to increase the exposure for investment banks to come for OCR (wasnt the case when i graduated). i believe there is a class on mergers and acquisitions, and i believe they have a track dedicated to kids who want to go into banking (might be more geared towards commercial banking, but youll still be spreading statements and doing due diligence type work). i recommend when you do end up start taking your finance classes, to take Dr. Yae for Portfolio Management, Dr. Rabinovitch for your derivatives classes and avoid Dr. Chisholm. feel free to shoot me any questions you have about the program, i graduated 2014.
