University of Manchester? University of Sydney? Help me WSO
So I recently applied to a few international schools out of pure boredom. I got accepted at the University of Manchester( and could get into a few more like Warwick), the University of Queensland in Brisbane, and the University of Sydney. I'm currently working on my GRE, but its been difficult with how busy my job is. I'm American born, and would love to have the opportunity to work in IBD with a BB in a major city abroad.
To give you an idea of where i am at, I'm working in Management Consulting with a leading healthcare IT company. The salary sucks, the hours are horrible, and their is no to little bonus. I went to Florida State University, a non target school, with a double major in accounting and finance. I had a 3.25 gpa overall, but had a 3.5 finance GPA. Actually, if you look at any of my quantitative, finance based, economics, or math based courses I have a 4.0.
I would love to get Wall Street Oasis's opinion on what I should do to break into a front office opportunity. In my mind, i'm set on going to school. I know it can e difficult to get work Visa's in both these locations, but have seen a list of larger BB's as well as some MM's who will sponsor work Visas. I've started reopening connections with people in finance before hand. I think it might be beneficial to land an Internship, no matter how informal it may be, before I step foot on campus. If you have any advice on this, I would be very appreciative. I recently applied to a few MM's analyst programs like Lazard. I'm working on reaching out to mid to upper management. I feel one of the beneficial aspects i have going on, Is my experience in consulting. Healthcare IT has been explosive this year. "meaningful use" incentives have created a surge in new tech companies, as well as a bunch of smaller hospitals selling out to larger hospital systems. Having a clear idea of what is going on gives me an upper hand for IBD medical sector.
What do you think WSO? All of these schools are fantastic, and considered target. They all have a huge alumni base in Investment Banking, even a few hundred a piece here in America. I just think it would be cool to work in the heart of London. I wouldn't mind Sydney, but i feel getting employed is more difficult there. Most firms seem to hire only if you have an employment Visa already. It takes 2 years to get a work Visa, and the program length is 2 years. I feel as of right now my ranking is Manchester> Syd> Queensland. I need to consider the idea of the school having an excellent reputation back here in the states as well. I'm not sure If they would interview me for internships/ FT positions from online applications in the USA
you're right - they won't interview you from online applications. You need to network your ass off. That being said, going to a school with a stronger alumni base, such as the University of Manchester, would be beneficial for that very reason - you're connected to the alumni of the school who are in banking and makes networking easier.
However, you don't HAVE to go to UM or any grad school at all if you network enough.
