University of Michigan (non-Ross) for IB?
Hi, I got accepted by the University of Michigan to attend as a transfer student starting this summer as a rising sophomore with a major in economics (not Ross). I'm wondering how big of a disadvantage am I at compared to the Ross kids when it comes to recruiting for IB? Is it possible to make up for that by getting a Ross minor and joining those selective IB clubs or is there something else that I can do?Appreciate insights from all perspectives, thanks a lot.

It can be done. I know of a number of Econ students who landed spots at EBs and top/mid-tier BBs. Yes, just apply to the investment clubs (many tops ones do accept non-Ross students), and network on Linkedin. If you have GPA > 3.5, know your stuff, are passionate about industry/investments and network through Linkedin with alums, you should get a number of looks/opportunities.
I can also confirm this. It takes more leg work, but is a decent spot to be in. Michigan is an awesome school and well worth it, even if you're an econ major looking to be in IB/PE. The most difficult thing is learning the technicals for interviews, but you can study with your Ross friends and do well. it will also be more difficult to maintain a high GPA vs Ross peers unless you're a top student. I know people will sub 3.5 who got into other decent/not top shops too. An econ major can also be good to help broaden your thought process and broader analytical skills. Michigan will never be a bad decision for a college choice.
Thanks for the reply! I'm already studying the technicals in the hopes of being an early bird lol
Thanks!
Analyst at MM (JEF, Blair, HL, etc.), graduated from Michigan with an Econ degree, it can definitely be done. I know many people who have done it, you just need to get involved in investment / IB clubs and if possible do the Ross minor if you're interested.
