Undergrad Financial Engineering - Thoughts?
Engineering department offers an "Engineering Mathematics, Statistics and Finance" major. According to its description:
-
"Students are provided with a strong background in mathematics and statistics, and an understanding of how these disciplines apply to practice in quantitative finance through the use of engineering tools, such as optimization. Students will learn about financial theory that governs the dynamics of financial instruments and markets, which impact our global community.
-
It is much more than a Financial Engineering major. A student will be exposed to broad areas of applied mathematics, operations research and statistics. The coverage of these topics should be sufficient for further study in the mathematical and statistical sciences or employment in many areas other than finance.
I would major in this, and likely minor in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (as I'm keeping my options open in case I want to go into tech).
I've read people here say that it's better to just get a BA/BS in Math, CS, Econ, etc. and then do an MSF or MFE. So, would you stay away from this UofT program, or does it look good? How would it be seen versus the ORFE programs at Princeton/Columbia?
Thanks.
