UofCalgary vs. Richard Ivey (Undergrad)

Hi everyone,

I've been reading the forums for a while would appreciate some advice. I'm currently a 2nd year undergrad student at the University of Calgary and was accepted to UWO Richard Ivey for their HBA program. I initially chose UofC because I'm dead set on working in Calgary due to some ongoing personal commitments that I cannot walk away from in the long term.

Basically, I want to know how the UofC compares to Ivey solely in Calgary IBD/consulting. I'm also paying my own way through university and was wondering if having Ivey would give me enough of an advantage over UofC in IBD recruiting in Calgary to justify the extra cost.

Based on the searches, it seems that a lot of senior positions are held by Ivey grads but what about analyst level? Ivey's placement report states they place 4% of the 89% that reported into Alberta but doesn't specify Calgary or IBD but that could be that most prefer other locations.

Would love to hear some opinions.

Both likely place similar in Calgary for IBD, however UofC basically doesn't place at all in Toronto. I would highly suggest Ivey though. MBB takes like 1-2 students per year from UofC, I assume it is much higher at Ivey. It would probably be easier to go through Ivey recruit with big5 and request Calgary. There are some local and well respected boutiques that a UofC grad would have better access too, but other then that Ivey has all the advantages

I go to Ivey, and I was also a 2nd year transfer student like you. Ivey will place a ton of people in Toronto IBD, and maybe 8-12 in various US offices. As well, you'll get about 4-5 MBB, and quite a few Deloitte/Accenture/Oliver Wyman.

Long story short, won't give you too much of an advantage in Calgary (at least not enough to justify 20k a year), but if you want to go elsewhere, definitely recommended.

Thanks for the input guys.

I can confirm that MBB hardly hires from UCalgary. We've had a few info. sessions by them and some got interviews but I don't know of anyone who landed a position.

I may be interested in Toronto or other locations in the future but I can always get an MBA when I have the opportunity to move away from Calgary.

I heard the CPMT program places extremely well into Calgary IBD and would be the best route if I could get into that. It is a little riskier than going to Ivey since I haven't been accepted into it like I have been at Ivey.

Most people come from CPMT or the Alberta program that is the same as CPMT. Ivey is the next biggest feeder all the top firms do look at Ivey kids lots of MDs are Ivey folk. Since they were long ago told go out to Calgary and get in on those mining deals.

It`s a tough call, if your good enough to get into Ivey you may have a shot at CPMT. I still think Ivey has way more options.

MBB does not have real offices out here (most senoir folk), really if you want to do consulting you should goto Toronto.

IM me to have a voice to voice discussion (I will send you my number). Being from Calgary and wanting to come back would make you an incredibly attractive Ivey student. This is a very critical decision and I am happy to "sell" you on the concept. For reference, I am a senior banker at a top IB firm in Calgary and I am an Ivey grad. I am happy to give you insight as a grad and as someone that has recruited for years from both schools.

For those wondering, yes, I am the same Nayls as the other but I somehow screwed up my account and can no longer access it. Apologies if anyone IMed that account and did not get a response as I have responded to all of the messages that I did get (and obviously cannot access new messages).
