Credit Suisse S&T?

I'm applying to Credit Suisse Equties S&T as a summer analyst, can anyone give me some background info on Credit Suisse Equities S&T? What in general is their S&T department known for?

Also, on the application there's an option for S&T or just trading, would the difference be that they would only consider your app for trading instead of both sales/trading?

CS has recently doubled its effectives in Equity S&T. They have done really well in 2006 and 2007. It's a swiss bank as well, so apparently they are supposed to treat you better than others (Wikipedia style: "sources needed"). They recently just got out of a lot of problems, kind of thanks to John Mack and the way he delt with the litigations and potential litigations the banks was facing after the internet bust. However, he fired a lot of people and hurt the bank a bit. In 2006 I believe they instored a new strategy were they merged all their businesses. They have a new strategy integrating all their lines of businesses together, which can or cannot be great for the bank. As I previously mentionned they have had some great results. Not only this but they have 20% less VaR (source: morningstar) than most over banks, which means that their trading department could be taking way more risks, thus being even more profitable.

Overall: I am holding some CS right now, and I am hoping for their stock to break the roof in the next few years.

Then it really depends on the desk you are at wether or not they are good or not.

What kind of exotic derivatives are you talking about?

ok so... i wish i could give a better answer then this but, here it goes...

i went to the info session at my school a couple of days ago for citi and when i asked them about the significance of my FE degree/quant stuff... the MD present told me that they simply 'weren't too invovled with exotic derivatives.'

im only a junior and really don't know much unlike you and the other around here, but it sounded as if the equity option work at Spot Trading seemed alot more 'exotic' than the options citi worked with...

im hoping im not making an absolute fool of myself, if i am... i appologize in advance. just trying to learn.

thanks

So you are doing FE undergrad? That's weird that he assumed you were quant... I've seen some MFEs do exotic options, vanillas, but also cash treasuries, so its more about what you are interested in doing.

Anyway, to answer your question, CS does still do a decent amount of exotic derivatives in FX and equities, not so much in Rates for the time being.

As far as I know Spot does not do any exotic options. I'm not sure how he was using the term, it seems like he was using it rather loosely meaning any kind of more quantitative strategies.

WSO thinks more math = more money which is utterly retarded. You have a bunch of math geeks that have found something useful to do with their skill sets. I have a friend at a Spot competitor that trades options and another friend at citi on their equity options desk. They are two very different types of market makers.

CS Program trading in equity is pretty big. Might go out on a limb and put them 2nd to only GS in program trading.

o ok so it sounds like CS has legit S&T activity , (unlike BoA... thought they would have more since they are BoA & M [feel free to lash out if im wrong. learning...])

so what do you mean when you say "program" equity trading... do you mean high frequency?

I am doing OR but FE concentrated. if you check out some of my other posts, you'll see that im planning on dropping the concentration and etc etc etc (long story, will elaborate if need be done)

So um... internships that are abroad (mainly hk). if i plan to end up in nyc... bad idea? i have heard mixed reviews on this...

i'm only responding to your most recent post, but are you really going to say that BoA lacks "legit S&T activity"? one of the largest banks in the world which has also recently absorbed one of the largest investment banks in the world isn't "legit" in sales and trading?

pack it in. seriously, you are destined for failure.

i appologize for that vague comment. My interests are in Trading and not much in Sales. I was told, when they came up to CU for an Info Session, that they saw themselves as more of a commercial bank and that they were also not heavily involved with exotic derivatives. Also unlike Citi, they did not have a Prop. Trading division.

that is what i meant by "legit S&T activity". sorry.

... and responding to your unnecessary remark at the end of your post, im curious to how you came to such a conclusion.

"destined to fail"... pretty harsh no?

BoAML is one of the biggest Investment Banks and players in trading of most products, although, like most firms, they have cut back on the exotics side.

cs is a great shop that has a lot going for it. i'm not sure how they are with analysts, but it's certainly not a warm and fuzzy culture. if you don't mind that, they have a lot of smart people (though surprisingly bad systems from what I hear) and you can get paid.

Ok.

I have also applied for a position: EMEA IBD - London. This was also done via networking, but I still had to submit an online application.

I haven't received any news. Been a week since I took the tests.

My 2 cents

Thanks... but I'm positive the HR is separate across different divisions. And in the US I don't have any online test or whatnot. Hopefully both of us hears back soon.

Anyone from from US CS S&T Equities?

isic06:
Yeah I went thru a referral as well.. skipped the tests.. hmm took within a week before the HR replied. there was ongoing communication within the recruiting mgr, HR and the person i went thru..

yup probably your best bet is to wait for the guy/lady..

good luck

Did u apply to us summer analyst...?

Just wondering since ur located in singapore and older

I'm hesitant to keep on bothering a banker since now its really up to me, he already introduced me to h r as well

He facilitated a meeting between h r and I in november I'm a non target for this particular division , and h r had contacted me asking for my satscores, that's about it. The resume drop ended jan 8 maybe its too early?

TraderNY:
You should have been contacted already. When did the banker send his referral?

Who did you meet Lawson? Who do you know someone from Investment banking? Yeah, I interviewed with them at the end of january so maybe you will get a response next week or so.

I mean SA recruiting hasn't really started yet, so I wouldn't get frantic yet.

Did the same, except for CS IB SA. Come from undergrad school and had an MBA student/summer associate fwd my resume to HR. I know IB is different from S&T, but the HR lady did the same as with you (responded and asked for SAT scores). My lady said I won't be contacted about my candidacy until late Feb.

I talked to 2 HR ladies and they said that for referrals it was too early, but wow, Feb seems really late, OCR has already started for my school...

Yeah I know, it threw me off as well. Not only Feb, but LATE Feb - most recruiting should already be over by then. I'm going to touch base with her and see if there's anything I can do in the meantime (network, reach out to people, etc.).

do you think they hold referral interviews/superdays separate from OCR/target school/etc?

Could be from applying SA the previous year or from a kid from your school who came across your resume/knows you.

Expect mostly fit questions, perhaps a brainteaser/probability question, and general market knowledge question like "What positions would you take in the market now." If you specify that you really like options, be prepared to answer questions relating to basic options theory.

To cut to the chase - take the other offer. One of 2 possibilities: 1. Someone at CS f***ed up and forgot to call and ding you - it happens sometimes, and is not professional, but that's life; 2. Someone at CS really f****ed up and forgot to call and offer you a SA position - never heard of it happening

Given the 2 week silence I would lean towards the first explanation (Occam's Razor and such).

If you really really want CS for FT, I'd send a very nice hand written letter to the partner in charge of regional recruiting, explain the situation, its unprofessional appearance, and that you hope this poor performance is not an indication of the FT recruiting ... but that's risque!
