Most useful classes!
I've seen way too many threads on the finance major being useless and that engineers are smarter.
But we all know major doesn't mean shit so lets focus on classes. What were the most useful classes you've taken in regards to banking/ trading/ finance? And then what were the most useful classes you took in general?
I'll start off.
for finance, financial accounting was the most important. The stuff is way too boring to learn on your own but too fundamental to skip. No need to study the intermediate / advanced ones imo.
In general, the most important class was a chinese etiquette seminar ( I want to work in China ). That class saved my life.
so far:
Finance:
Financial Accounting
corporate finance
General:
Chinese Etiquette (for those interested in China)
I was gonna say Financial Accounting to learn to read/interpret financial statements and also any intro corp finance class to learn time value of money/valuation.
Financial modelling & Financial analysis statements
For my non-major course my favorite class is one on modern Chinese literature (and yes it was in Mandarin). We got a really cool teacher who only use readings with lots of dark humor/sarcasm in it, it was fun, but I still remember having to look up like a shitload of new words :|
*financial statements analysis I mean
Derivatives and Risk Management Mathematical Statistics Macroeconomic Policy Mathematical Economics Finance I
This for macro style trading.
Damn, and I thought this was gonna be a Call of Duty thread.
Pretty much the same classes you all mentioned:
Accounting 101 Macroeconomics Business Statistics Principles of Finance (DCF, TVM, DDM) Capital Markets International Finance
How should I rank these classes in order of relevance to IB internship coming up in summer? (Originally Posted: 12/16/2014)
Corporate Financial Management-
Security Valuation- I learn to value securities
Managerial Economics- I will supposedly learn relevant skills. Usually this is a complete course of study, so I question whether it will be useful?
Check out the syllabuses, and look for corporate finance/ M&A cases and modeling.
My guess is that it will be in the below order:
Which of the following classes would be the most practical/useful to take? (Originally Posted: 06/20/2012)
Hey guys
I am allowed to take one of the following accounting classes for my degree plan (I am a finance major) and I was wondering which one would be the most practical/useful/good to know for real world application in banking:
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
managerial accounting (although i think financial acct is more applicable from what i remember)
Financial Statement Analysis is important, but you can just read the Rosenbaum book, and take a different class.
I'd say statement analysis, taxation might be worth it too
Definitely financial statement analysis.
During the interview process, a strong foundation of accounting principles and how the statements interconnect can be a great asset during the barrage of interview questions derived from this topic.
Additionally, when you actually get to the job, the ability to rip apart financial statements and build them from scratch will play a crucial role to model building, comparable companies analysis, and comprising CIMs (credit information memorandums). CIMs are essentially lengthy .pdf files that are used during the marketing phase in sell side M&A to blast Private Equity firms for prospective business. Throughout these CIMs, a wide variety of financial metrics are used as you find new and exciting ways to slice and repackage the information in the financial statements.
Hope this helps, and best of luck in the class you pick! Study hard and get an A! :)
Most useful(for your job) class you took in college (Originally Posted: 07/03/2012)
Hey guys,
I was wondering what the most useful classes (by the content itself and not the professor) you took in college was in terms of how frequently you use that knowledge now(I'm assuming most people here have finance/econ related jobs )? I want to make a tentative 4 yr schedule just to see what my path should look like(yes, I should try to relax instead). Please briefly describe what that class was since course names vary(example Econ 001-intro to microecon). Thanks in advance!
If you're a Penn/Wharton alumni please let me know because I might be able to schedule the exact class.
If we're talking about the job I'm thinking of... Art History helped the most.
Intro to Astronomy
Ethics
Data Structures and Algorithms.
Pub401: How to Not Act Like a Total Ivy League Douchebag in Front of the Lesser Common Folk
Is that seriously a real class? Lol.
@Nabooru Inferiority complex much? (everybody in my area actually regards the state school as being infinitely- superior)o_O
joke, man
would be useful
Intro. to Financial Accounting. Honestly, not even sure I needed anything else I learned in econ or the one finance class I took.
